I just bought a rem 700 308p. Itcame with a tact rail and I really like the look. The problem is the scope is so off center that I dont have enough left to right adjustment to get it centerd. Plus Im not sure how off the up down is. What can I do to fix this problem and keep the rail. I am new to this and it might be my doing.

Re: Need help with scope..

Chances are (read, most of the time) the run-out in that barrel is not timed correctly and you are loosing your windage. Very common with factory barrels because they aren't worried about bore run-out or barrel timing.

If you are loosing most or all of your windage your scope base holes would have to be so far off that you couldn't get the screws in.

That being said it is possible that the screw holes are not drilled straight but at an angle and when you torque them down the base rotates to one side and isn't sitting on top of the receiver. This will cause a loss of windage as well.

Don't assume that it's the scope base holes because most of the time that's not it.

Who's rail is it? Who's scope is it? This in itself can be an issue as well.

In a word, yes.

Have someone who is familiar with building rifles take a look at it to be sure it's not something simple.

BTW how is it that you determined you are loosing windage? Using a bore sighter, test fire, or something else?

What scope rings?
