Cowboy, since you are most familiar with the feel of AR type rifles, why not consider a tube chassis such as the XLR Industries or Tubb 2000.

Or a Mcree along those lines

Re: need help with stock choice

I spell just fine, thanks. It's the editing process on my phone that escapes me.

I have no reason to read your thread. I would hardly call my response an attack. More of a helpful suggestion.

But since your not a new guy, why don't you learn not to be an asshole. Did I spell that right?

Have a nice day.

Re: need help with stock choice

I'm hardly the grammar Nazi. I just find it very difficult to read something written like a fourth grade student wrote it. I was simply suggesting he take a little more time with his post and he might receive some intelligent suggestions.

Ok, so I was overboard on the Asshole comment. I apologize for that.

Maybe I should have just let it be. We all know you can't fix stupid!

Oh, and the the OP. I suggest a MCM A5. Expect to pay around $1,000 for it.

Re: need help with stock choice

Good suggestions on stocks above, especially the "AR style" due to your military service. Personally, I like the McM A-5, but it's personal preference.

What caught my eye was you mentioned an AICS. They are outstanding stocks, but not for everyone. I would try one before you buy - I'm glad I did - my hand did not fit.

Before you part with the $$$, try some different stocks if you can. There might be some guys in the Daytona area that could help you out.

It has to do with ALL members. Not just new. Be civil or you will find yourself on the outside looking in.

Re: need help with stock choice

I don't really have any experience with any aftermarket stocks, but I have been doing tons of research recently and I ended up getting a Manners T4a for my savage 12 that will be a target rifle.
I looked at the XLR Chassis and I did like them but they are a little more expensive and I wasn't exactly sure if I wanted an Ar feeling rifle.

Re: need help with stock choice

I'm surprised nobody has given the best advice I got when I was looking at stock upgrades. Try them if you can! See if you can meet up with someone in your area and try a McMillan, Manners, AICS, or any other chassis system. I found that I do not like the AICS, but I love the McMillan and Manners stocks. You may find that even though you are familiar with ARs, something else is actually more comfortable.

Re: need help with stock choice

OK, I'm pretty new to this stuff, also.

But a stock is nothing more than a support for a barreled action.

Unless it has a physical effect upon that action then its effect upon the ultimate requirement of hitting the target is nil.

The stock, however, does facilitate the shooter repeating the correct placement of body to stock and achieving a consistent sight picture. In this aspect it plays an important role.

Now, all things being equal, bedding, torque, etc., etc., etc. how does one differ from another. How much more down the range accuracy does another $300 impart?

Where is the empirical evidence, documentation and so forth that establishes one stock is superior to another?

Just stirring up the bee hive . . .

Re: need help with stock choice

You are all assholes for not telling him that a Savage isn't gonna fit in an AICS. Try Manners or McMillan. Those are your options for fiberglass. Otherwise, the XLR and maybe others are made for the Savage rifles. Most everything is going to be in the $600-$1000 range.

i have seen more than 1 savage in a aics all it takes is some know how so take it easy with calling people assholes

Re: need help with stock choice

Just continuing the fine tradition of the discussion above. An AICS for a Savage is not something you can buy at MidwayUSA and bolt together is all I'm saying. Most people don't have the resources to fit it properly and I haven't seen one for sale in quite some time. Lots of easier options for the OP, but possible I guess with a friend, a mill, and money.

I second this. I couldn't get comfortable behind an AICS...not every stock will work for you.

Re: need help with stock choice

i understand what your saying in this, im not a fan of the stock stock, lol, it just feels well like shooting a mos-sin naguant or how ever you spell it, i got hte threaded version and have a muzzle brake in the mail, im sure that will help i can hit a good group at 200 yrds but want a little comfort, im not looking for a cupholder and a heated air bag of a gun i wish i could afford one but i feel like im holding my cheek up to an uzi folding stock some times, i know its just me and i should put my female parts back in pick up my sea bag and get to marching, but would like to have a better stock

respectfully

Re: need help with stock choice

I just ordered a McMillan A5 for my Salvage 10PC. I was also looking at the XLR chassis but for this gun I did not want it to feel like and AR, not that its a bad thing...

I also think a better stock is not going to make your rifle more accurate, but it will make you more comfortable and possibly make you more accurate. The first time I used a McM stock, and then got back on my factory stock, I knew I had to upgrade.

FWIW I will probably get an XLR one day for another rifle. Hope this helps.
