I'm running a bushy 4200 3-12 ffp on a rem 5r 308. With a 0 moa base I have 15 mils of down elevation after a 100yd zero will I be better to run a 20 moa or 30 moa base to get the most out of my scope if my math is right a I have room for the 30 am I thinking right.

Re: Need help with tapered scope base

you should deffinitely be able to fit it but the question is why? optics perform best when they are at or as close as possible to their mechanical center, so while you can fit it, you would likely have to be way down at the bottom of the elevation range and therefore degrading your picture quality if you were shooting at closer distances. Tapered bases are really meant to keep your scope close to the optical center for the range you are shooting so unless you are planning on shooting pretty damn far all the time, i wouldnt suggest this. Also, be careful with tapered bases because they can make your cheek weld really suck which will negatively effect shooting at all distances

I think he knows that...by adding the base he is looking to push his 100yd zero further into that lower 15 so he can get more upward elevation for extending his max distance.

i see... well i dont know how many mills of adjustment his scope has but if its 30 or more elevation total then hes easily good to go with what hes got.

Re: Need help with tapered scope base

I'm thinking by adding a 30 moa I'm adding around 8.3 mils giving me around 13 mils up from 100 yd zero, sound right? That puts me close to mech zero at 100yds

Re: Need help with tapered scope base

I believe that the bushnell that he has only has 20 mils of elevation leaving him 5 mils to go up. however, 5 mils will get me to 600 yards in my .308 with a 168 grain smk going 2680 fps. If you really need to get to 1000 maybe a 10 MOA base would be a good alternative but i wouldnt go 20 or 30.

yes if your lacking UP then a 30 MOA base will give you 8.3 mills more UP but if you have 15 mills of UP then you have enough to get to 1000 yards.

Federal gold medal match 168gr sierra going 2550fps needs 12.9 mills of up with a 100 yard zero...

but you origonally said you had only 15 mills of DOWN so im not sure i understand what your situation is.

he has 15 mils of DOWN which is leaving his with 5 mils of UP in the scope that he has since that scope has 20 mils total elevation

damn only 20 Mils total?... wow...my SS10X42HD has like 45 mils of elevation. but yeah if he has 15 DOWN and that leaves 5 UP then he would need the 30MOA base to get to 1000 yards and even then just BARELY does he get there.

yep it sounds like youll need a 30MOA base if you want to get to 1000 yards...but with 7 mils of UP your good to 700 yards... but i dont think id like running my scope with the reticle maxxed out.
