Need info and advice on choosing load

Gents,

Just acquired an mr762 and wanting to start hand loading for it. It doesn't have to be extreme precision reloading (ie using lapua brass only) . This rifle is my battle rifle
For cqb-mid range and occasional distance (max effective range for this rifle will be 800m). I will also use this rifle to kill small-med game.
For distance , I have an ai in 260 rem so going past 800m, really 600m isn't my goal.

From what I'm reading on the hide and google, 168 is generally the favored round but people refer to fgmm 168's. As I said I would like to reload and would like what my "rifle likes" but haven't heard of much testing.

Barrel spec is as follows:
Heavy hammer forged
16.50"
4 lands and grooves, RH twist, 1:12

Probably going to end up buying factory loads for the brass (swa, fgmm, etc) in bulk then reload with those unless I can get components cheap all together.

All in all would like to know the basics
Bullet grain as type (flight performance > game take down)
Type of powder to use (unfamiliar with 308 loads)

You've got a short barrel, so I suggest a faster burning powder if you are interested in pushing heavy pills. However, with a 1:12 and a shorter barrel, I think your best would be something like the 155 lapua scenars over some varget. Buy a few hundred rounds of federal 168s and 175s to get you out there. Then save up that brass and reload into something you'd like. I shoot lapua, my friend shoots federal, and there's not much difference in the brands other than me not needing to do any case prep beyond trimming or chamfer/deburr when I trim. Look into ramshot tac, varget and imr 4064.

Thanks jayson. So based on barrel info better for me to shoot the 155's?

What issues would I run into for shooting heavier or at least 168/175?

Wow... Hk fail.. Reading the operators manual and it says barrel twist is 1:11... Twice! Website said 1:12
Back of operators manual also states 1:12...

Shooting the 178s, I run into unburnt powder and a velocity cap. There's no point in me going over a certain charge because my velocity stays the same. I have a 1:10, so my twist allows great control over the heavies. Your twist is slower, and should lean towards lighter bullets. Sure, try everything under the sun to find what your gun likes , but you'll probably settle with a flat-shooting bullet that brings you closer to those "cheater calibers" of 6.5 and 6mm. I just have a thing for short barrels and heavy rounds. My 14.5" AR shoots 77gn smk. Check out the 155 lapua scenars, load them to mag length over some cci primers and do a very slight crimp. Win
