Let's try again as I didn't realize my supporters status hadn't gone through. I'm trying to find when this rifle was made and a value on it. It's from the Remington Custom Shop and the original case is marked as a 40-XS Rifle Only. It appears to be one of the early Remington 40-XS Tactical System 308 rifles but I can't find anything on value. It's got a McMillan stock and a 24 Inch stainless HB that is factory threaded with a factory muzzle brake. I've been able to find a couple of pictures of this rifle in 338 Lapua but nothing in 308. Any help on positive identification and a value would be appreciated. I apologize for the post earlier and honestly thought my supporter payment had went through. Thanks in advance.

Hey, is this thread dead? Have you found out more about your rifle? I have the same rifle, there's a label on the case says R&D Rm, so I suspected that it was a "shop rifle" before Remington went bankrupt. It would be nice if a former Remington employee could shed some light on it.

Mine didn't come with a soft case like yours, it had foam in the case and a Remington gun sock. The guy saved all the tags and cards from all the stuff that he put on the rifle. The scope was gone though.

If you google Remington 40-XS, there are a few articles pop up. stating what the rifle would come with, I am sure you have read that, one article is from the DOJ. I don't think Remington built a lot of them back in the days, mine is a 308 with no muzzle brake like yours, came with a Turner sling, bipod, and Badger scope mount, the label called it a "system". I have a Remington Defense catalog with this rifle in it, when I have time, I'll post the picture.

NRA match rifle, "across the course" competition. 20 shots slow-fire standing offhand, 20 shots, 200 yard rapid-fire standing to sitting, (2, 10 shot strings) 20 shots, standing to prone (2, 10 shot strings) 300 yard prone rapid-fire, 20 shots 600 yards prone slow-fire Clip slotted drilled and tapped for "Iron sights" Redfield's, Warner etc. For 200 & 300 yard rapid fire you loaded with stripper clips.

Mine does have a muzzle brake. It did come with the Badger scope base. I read DOJ article. Wish there was some way to place a value on it.

All I know is the XB was in the early 1990's Remington law enforcement catalog, the XS showed up on the 2007 to 2011 catalog, and not on the 2013 catalog, they were designed for the military and government agency market, I supposed the civilian could get them too if they contacted the right dealers. About 12 years ago, "the rock" Remington R&D showed up and I had no idea what was that all about. As far as the value go, I would not let mine go for cheap, it was from the "R&D Rm, 4th floor".

No muzzle brakes on match rifles….

IMO , it's very niche. Some older people will pay 1500-3k, most people will walk away and don't care. Remington has destroyed thier historical "provenance" in the eyes of most people. Not all but ask many here, we saw them at their best and worst

I love my Remingtons, deployed with many, and would put my older rifles against any one but..............
For 2-3k you can have any custom action with a custom barrel chambered to your specs and it'll have a wider market in cases of need for resale.

Keep it, enjoy it, pass it on to a family member. It's a cool rifle

That is a very late Model from the Custom Shop before they subed to Dakota Arms.
I have a few of these earlier models and the stocks are slightly different but none of them have muzzle brakes so yours is a Custom Order.
All the Remington information has disappeared so there is no source to search by serial number for these rifles.
Should have come with a little square of paper with a fired three shot group, signed and dated.
Look everywhere in case it was stuck behind something.

Why would Dakota Arms gun say Custom Shop Ilion New York on the barrel? Shouldn't it say "Dakota" on it? I have the same rifle, no muzzle brake, with a slightly different stock (no hook) like you said, with the 3 shot target. I also have Remington defense brochures from that era, the 2007 catalog shows no muzzle brake, the 2011 catalog shows muzzle brake. The catalog says they should have Mcmillan A3 or A5 stock, so which one is A3, and which one is A5, with the hook shape an A5, without the hook shape A3? The question is when or what year that Remington moved its custom shop to Dakota?

I never posted it was a Dakota arms gun. It could be either the Illion
Custom Shop or Dakota Custom Shop.
As to barrel, if the barrel was manufactured in Illion, then that's what would be on the barrel no matter where final assembly took place.
I think the move was around 2015.
A bad lot of Winchester T22 was oversized and ripped the ejector out of my Rem Custom Shop 547 Target.
I had waited 4 years for The Custom Shop to get better wood and for a $300 uncharge I got nice piece.
I had to send the 547 to Dakota Arms for a fix. Dakota told me there was a 10 year warranty on the work and fixed it for free.
Winchester refunded my money for the case of T22 which they wanted returned.
The information for the transition of the Remington Custom Shop is sorely lacking and since there is no source of information like Cody for Winchester, all else is speculation.
I have in my possession one of two Winchester 52D's made with 1" Hart barrels and supposedly sold to employees.
A former employee says the Manager of the Custom Shop ok'd the sale. I personally talked with the manger and he does not remember those guns.
The guns are roll marked correctly on the stainless steel Hart barrels.
So goes the lack of information for the past!
