I was wondering what rate of twist would be best for 107 and 123gr. smk's wouldn't be shooting anything lighter and max would be 130gr. bergers. I have a .260 with a krieger 1:8.5 and it loves the 130gr. bergers but so far doesn't seem to like the 123's. Probably be getting a broughton barrel would a 1:9 or 1:10 be better? Thanks

Re: need input on .260 twist rate

If you are thinking you might shoot the 130 Bergers, I would play it safe and use the 1-9. 1-8 will still shoot the lighter bullets but allow you to go heavier later if you decide to. All my .260's really shined with the 140's. I did try and shoot the 120's and 123's for a while but ended up going back to the 140's.

good luck,
JamieD

I would stick with the 9" twist if you go that route. That twist should still give you decent velocity and work with those various lighter grain bullet weights.

So you appreciate muzzle velocity over impact velocity?

Re: need input on .260 twist rate

I am shooting a 9.1 twist Obermeyer with my 6.5x47L. This twist is what Boots recommends for the 6.5x284 with 140-142 range. I bought it from a 1000yd shooter and gave it a try as I wanted an Oby and it was my only choice at the time for twist etc.

Haven't tried the 130's yet but with the 123 Lapua I ran a 10shot string @ 3015fps with an SD of 4. Load was 38gr of RL15 and CCI450. Jumping it .010. Shoots excellent and is a 28" tube. Need to work with H4350 a bit more but don't think I might get that velocity. Most are stating best accuracy etc around 2900-2950 IIRC. Mine has been a safe queen for almost a yr. Too many toys I guess.

+1 I have to go with dar on this one.

Re: need input on .260 twist rate

Would a 9" twist stabilize the 130 and 140 VLD style bullets?

Ive heard 9" will work up to 130 standards, but with VLD's you need to speed it up???
