I'm assembling components for my next build and the money is beginning to tighten up. I'm currently running a very inexpensive mount on my son's AR so he needs an upgrade too.

His rifle is a carbine with an adjustable stock and the scope is a Vortex Viper 2-7x32 BDC. Mine is rifle length (or will be) with an A2 buttstock and will initially be a Bushnell 10x40 Mildot.

I don't believe either of these scopes are know for excessive eye relief. His has an offset mount now that can't be utilized with the stock fully extended and the mount located farthest forward.

I'd love to be able to get away with a couple of risers and standard rings such as the Burris Zee ring for the time being.

But I've found these and was wondering if any has an opinion>

SWFA S.S.A.L.T. 30mm Scope Mount

It's certainly a step up in what I have my son's scope mounted in and the price is equal to what I would pay for two risers and a set of Zee rings. The offset is there but could be located farther back as needed. Also, it has the 1" inserts so that if we ever stepped up in tube diameter, the mount could handle it. I just don't want to buy them if they are crap. The look to be comparable to the Burris PEPR mount.

Thanks,

Paul

Optics mount

Just don't get a Burris QD Pepper mount. I just sent one back as it didn't hold zero. Sighted the rifle in one range trip then had the POI cange drastically two groups into the following range trip. I never even removed the scope/mount so there is no reason why this should have happened. I went with a non QD Vortex one piece mount. I hear te regular non QD Burris Pepper mount is GTG, as is the Rock River one. If you want to spend some ching the LaRue QD mount is supposed to be one of the best of all the QD ones.

If you have $160ish to spend I'd grab an ADM Scout or Recon, they are a little cheaper than a Larue but by most accounts as good or better. If a really tight budget, the Primary arms mounts are decent and not QD. I tried a set of Warne Tactical AR aluminum QD 1" rings ($70) for my Viper 2-7x32 and liked them except for one of the screws/holes came stripped from the factory. Thats one nice thing about that 2-7, you can get away without a cantilever mount.... But if switching scopes out in the future might as well get one that will work later, such as a 30mm cantilever with 1" inserts. Vortex (cm-202), Leupold (IMS) also have nice cantilever non-qd's for about $90. The PEPR and SSALT non-qd are fine, maybe a little heavy. The Larue and ADM will by far hold their value better than anything else.

I'm going to try this. Seems like a reasonable compromise.

Get yourself an ADM Recon or Larue mount like mentioned above. Buy once, cry once. Either one is good. I've owned both and like both. Some people will argue one is better than the other. My opinion is they both are the same in terms of quality.

I've got two to buy. Can't swing $300 plus right now.

I may be able to just get away with rings with the little Viper scope Maybe I can spring for one for my rifle.

I've used the YHM riser in the past with good results. I'm presently using the Badger 22MOA riser rail on a gas gun, but the concept is the same. This method of gaining the required height and eye relief works fine - especially if the goal is to use a set of lower rings so that the scope can easily be swapped to a bolt gun.

LaRue mount, for sure. I've never had any zero shift on mine when taking it on and off. Just make sure you put it back in the same spot and you're good to go. They have a lot of different types of mounts in different heights for you to choose from.
