If anyone has a load recipe for the hornady 168gr Amax bullet I would appreciate it. I am loading for the rifle pictured below
18inch barrel 1/10 twist. I know I can look this up but maybe if you have something that worked for you... while I am loading for tomorrow as I am going shooting.. I figured I would just ask.. thanks in advance

What the hell happened to the cardinal reloading rule....Work Up Your Load For Your Rifle.

Damn............

Re: need quick help- 308 load 168 Amax? you got one?

ok nevermind then. everytime I post targets of groups people volunteer loads. So now I ask and I broke a cardinal rule? really.

46gr Varget
46gr 4064
44.5 RL15
43 4895
41 8208
40.5 Benchmark

Any of those loaded to 2.800" ought not break your rifle and work well.

Armydog- do you mean 178 Amax? and I may try those- i started out with the 175's and the best I could do was .61inches and consistently 3/4inch groups with sierra 175gr- I want to only shoot 175s - but I am kinda exploring what this rifle will actually do.... I really do want to be in a heavier bullet so maybe the 178's will work. are they longer bullets? like the 168's I have - the Amax bullets I have to seat deeper than I do with the sierra 168's - and for some reason I think my barrel likes the long bullets...

The 178s are shaped differently than the 175's. I used a bullet comparitor and seated both 175's and 178's to the same length to the ogive and the 178's wound up being seated a bit longer than the 175's.

I use 44gr of RL15 for both. It shoots in the 3s if im on my game. Give that a whirl and see what you think.

hey thanks Rich. Also that makes sense about the two bullets, cause I was having to adjust my seating micrometer on my forster dies when I went from the sierra bullets to the A max bullets. thanks again.

Ran these on Quick Load for 18" barrel
46gr. Varget 109% fill vel=2650 @ 66380psi dangerous load!
46gr. IMR4064 111% fill vel=2688 @ 70032psi [/color]dangerous load![color:#000000]
44.5gr. R15 vel=2572 @ 57215psi
43gr. H4895 vel=2489 @ 52747psi
43gr IMR4895 vel=2506 @ 55280psi
40.5gr. Benchmark vel=2469 @ 55534

Not sure but I think a couple of these loads may break your gun & you!

Re: need quick help- 308 load 168 Amax? you got one?

thanks TIpper. I backed off on all of the ones I actually had powder for - which is varget, reloader 15, IMR 4895- so I usually go two to three grains back from Max or whatever the load is and work my way up. but I thank you for considering my safety.

Re: need quick help- 308 load 168 Amax? you got one?

44gr 4064 + CCI #200 in WIN brass works for me, 2680 ft/s and ~1/2 MOA on a good day for me.

I agree that 46.0gr 4064 may be too much for some rifles, it would be over max in mine. My rifle really really likes 42.0 gr 4064 but it's a bit slow for the shooter, so I use 44.0 which is the next accuracy node up that I found but still below max.

Mine has been run through both my 700 and a friends DPMS SASS with great results.

Re: need quick help- 308 load 168 Amax? you got one?

44 varget in a win or hornady case for bolt guns
45 varget same cases for the DPMS- it seems to cycle a bit better goosed up a tad.

I'm not comfortable running a gas rifle to the max charge wieghts of a bolt gun, brass takes more of a beating through the semi, no need to push that hard.

Good Luck

Re: need quick help- 308 load 168 Amax? you got one?

notquiteright do you reload? and if so how often do you aneal the case necks for the brass used in your gas guns? Or anyone reading this please let me know....
