I am looking to buy the best scope I can get for a 308 up to 800 yards for predator hunting
I only have a budget of around 500.౦0. I just want the best bang for my buck and I don't have alot of experience in this department. Ty

Help us help you, and give us a little bit more information on what your requirements are for the scope.

Go here:

What kind of rifle is this going to be mounted on? Do you need adjustable turrets or would you prefer to set your zero and hold over? Do you need illumination? Do you have a preference on things like reticle plane, reticle design, or MOA/MIL adjustments. If you're hunting predators, Im assuming this will be a nighttime or dusk optic, so low-light performance may be of great concern. Happy to help. We just need a better picture of how you will use the optic.

I am thinking mil adjustment and it will normally be early morning or late afternoon. It is going on a savage 10 fcp-sr in 308 with a 20" barrel I need something with good power and something I can find my target with pretty quick. Definitely adjustable power. I have never spent more than 150 on a scope and would really like to get the best I can for my money

I would search the classified's or see if any vendors are still liquidating the old viper line of scopes. Also if you decide what you want, throw a WTB ad in classifieds. You would be surprised what people have laying around and forget about, A WTB ad seems to jog peoples memories and could get you a nice price.

With a $500 Im sure aware you will need to make some compromises on what features are provided with the scope. For hunting optics I prefer a pretty generous low magnification field of view, so I usually recommend an optic with 3-4x on the low end. This isnt always the case, but generally a larger objective lens (50mm for example) will provide you with a little more brightness in low light conditions. Given the info you've provided I would second WeiserBucks suggestion and look for a second hand SWFA 3-15. These are available in both SFP and FFP. The FFP are usually more, but if you catch them on sale they are only $499. Might be worth a call to SWFA to see if they will sell it to you for that price.

The Weaver Tactical 3-15X50 is only slightly above your budget, but in my opinion, well worth it. The glass in these scopes is great. Mil/Mil, FFP, Illuminated reticle, and great Field of View. Natchez has them on sale right now for a screaming good deal. This would be my highest recommendation around your budget.

Another option might be this weaver from Midway. These are pretty solid little scopes, lightweight, track well, and the glass is not bad at all. I would say its on par with the SWFA in terms of image quality. The downside is this is a SFP scope, but as long as you can work with it, the scope is a bargain.

My final recommendation would be to look at the Athlon Helios or Talos BTR Series of scopes. I have zero experience with these optics and Athlon is a very new company. However, they seem to be performing well and their customer service so far seems to be excellent, should you ever have an issue.

Hope this helps and doesn't just muddy the water. Good luck.
