One of my co-workers asked me about a new rifle so I thought I would throw it out here for you guys.

He needs a new rifle for our SWAT team. He has 4K allocated for the rifle. This will be used on duty so it needs to be real world not competition style. Here are some basic requirements:

Chambered in .308
20" Barrel
Semi or Bolt doesn't matter

A local shop is pressing the Repr on him pretty hard. I mentioned the LaRue OBR to him as well As the LMT but I thought I would ask here for some other ideas.

Thanks guys

Re: Need rifle for work

For me the rifles from accuracy international are very good in every situation. If they are to havy then the Blaser LRS2 ore the Tikka TRG22 are a good alternative. I like the Accuracy International as .338 lapua magnum cause it is stronger. But the ammunation is more expensiv.

Best regards from germany

An other point you have to think about is the livetime of the barrel. Military weapons have a longer livetime. Aske your gunsmith or in the shop.

Re: Need rifle for work

does that price include optic?

Are they willing to go to a new platform? I would assume they might be bias towards their current platform, if not I would go OBR for a semi and TRG for a bolt, all dependent on whether or not they are trying to get optic with that 4k

where can you get an EMC for $4k? I have not seen them go below $4.5k

4K is for the rifle only no glass. The only real requirement is that it has to be in 308. Everything else is up to the sniper.

Who are some trusted smiths for full customs?

Re: Need rifle for work

My bad on the 40,000 rounds barrel for the EMC, re-read the other thread and it's a 40k rounds life cycle.

@Eternal, price does not include optics and what you'll pay for the gun depends on seller/condition.

Re: Need rifle for work

Buy action from bugholes.
Buy barrel from bugholes.
Buy the trigger you want.
Bugholes can barrel it.
Torque it to a manners mini chassis.
You won't have more than 2800 in it depending on how many colors of cerakote.

Re: Need rifle for work

4k is a very nice budget for a rifle.

Hell, I had to buy the rifle and supply my own ammo.

First off, he needs to make absolutely certain that there are no requirements in the general orders on manufacture. Many departments will restrict firearm choices to specific manufatures'.

As far as gas guns, I would probably look first to GAP.

There are numerous reports of Knights having reliability problems, I have no way of knowing how true they are. Just ask some of the M110 users.

As far as bolt guns, the AI or TRG are ready to go from the get go, but adding your ancillary equipment will drive the price beyond 4k rather quickly.
There are plenty of excellent gun plumbers around that can build a rifle on a custom or 700 action.

You can also order from McMillan or Shilen. They both offer rifles for order.
