I know NOTHING about long range precision shooting, but am buying a Remington 700P .308 26" Heavy 1/12 and need a scope..... I have looked at Bushnells...Vortex...Leupold.....Night Force.....yes, the last 2 can get expensive, and may be out of reach for now. Of those....what do you suggest? I may be able to spend 1K....but would LOVE to stay in the 700 or 800 range.
The Vortex I was suggested was 4-16x50 .... 700.00.....again, I know NOTHING.

Thanks!

Steve

Yes, these high end scopes can get expensive. There is a bit of "sticker shock" involved in shopping. From your description it sounds like a vortex Viper PST might fit your needs.

Take the $1000 and attend a basic course. Borrow or rent a rifle. When you return you will have an idea of what scope you want.

First off, it depends on the type of shooting that you do.
If you are attempting to shoot the tiniest groups possible, that calls for one type, if you are hoping to get involved in tactical style comps and will shoot unknown distance, that normally calls for another.

What you must decide is whether you want first focal plane (FFP) or second focal plane (SFP).

A FFP will maintain your mil-dot relation at any power and allow you to use hold-overs and leads at any power. The reticle will increase in size as the magnification increases. It does NOT cover more of the target as the object grows at the same rate.

A SFP scope will NOT maintain the mil-dot relation but the reticle will stay the same size. As the magnification increases, the reticle will actually cover less of the target.

A SFP is normally used by benchrest and f class shooters. It allows a very fine sight picture.
Also, most hunting scopes sold in the US are of the SFP variety.

FFP scopes are used by tactical shooters, the USMC and the Army.
The vast majority of Police marksman use SFP as they are slow to change and most admins do not understand the benefits.

The Weaver 3-15x EDMR tactical FFP illuminated scope is a best buy at about 750 dollars and would suit you very well.

The Vortex you are looking at is the SFP model, it also would serve you very well. They also feature a FFP model for about 150 more. They offer very good reticles.
I have looked through both the weaver and vortex ffp scopes. I found the glass on the weaver noticeably better.

Bushnell and Burris both make high quality scopes in your price range that are of the SFP variety.

If you are strictly shooting on the range, I highly suggest this:

I haven't used one, but I've never heard a bad word about them and Vortex has excellent customer service in the event you do have a problem.

Re: Need scope advice please

Your best bet is SFP non illuminated, but would recommend at least 20X top end magnification. Go to the range and talk to people and most of the time they'll be happy to let you look through their scopes and at least you'll have an idea of how a 200-300 yard target looks through various scopes. You want fine cross hairs with uncluttered reticle.
