I'm getting your opinions on what scope I should get. First I'm kind of new to the long range shooting and here's my goals! I am having a custom gun built in 6.5x47Lapua off of a rem 700 action with a hart .790 barrel. I'm going to use the gun for hunting/target. My goal is to be able to shoot up to a 1000yds without the need of special moa bases etc. Most of my shooting while hunting will be less than 500yds but will be shooting paper at 500-1000 a good bit. I have looked at sightron leupolds and many others and really want to use something in a 6-24x50 size with either mil dots or hash. Not sure on ffp or sfp and which is better and also would like to stay around $800 but may go $1000
Thanks for your help

When I went through this process (except no hunting use), after reading the threads and talking to the people at Sport Optics (who have a very nice Sniper's Hide discount), I got a Vortex Viper PST 6-24 FFP scope. It has worked well for me.

But you also will not go wrong with the SWFA SS, Bushnell, Leupold, or other scopes in that price range.

But from also reading those threads, most people suggest a low power more like 3x for hunting.

Multi-role scopes that you can have a low enough 'low' for hunting and a high enough 'high' for target shooting need to have a high magnification ratio. A 5x ratio scope like the Weaver 4-20x50 has a nice wide ratio with useable hunting 4x and decent 20x for target and long range shooting. There are others that could work out well too, like the SS 3-15x42. The New Sightron S-Tac 2.5-17.5x looks really interesting so far and would seemingly make a good hunting/ longer range scope.
