So i'm looking to get a new barrel and came across "SS barrel blank .308 13 twist tight bore Palma" in a equipment exchange section of a forum, the bore is .299. 1.246 shank, .780 muzzle palma contour. I've tried looking for tight bore and palma info but i just need a little extra info on this barrel, such as reloading and if using a normal .308 projectile and powder would suffice. can someone give me some insight please?

Re: Need some info for Palma barrels

Standard .308" bullets will work perfectly. Tight bore barrels may give slightly higher velocity for the same charge weight. 13-twist is optimal for 155gr bullets, might be a bit too slow for 175's.

Re: Need some info for Palma barrels

So with that said does the starting point for how much charge is used change to below recomended gr's for powder??

Can anyone else please chime in?

Re: Need some info for Palma barrels

palma gun loads are generally pretty warm because of the need to maintain velocity at 1K, the brass you choose will affect the load too, Winchester brass will take about 1/2 to 1 grain more powder than Lapua, most palma gun shooters with 30" barrels are running between 2980-3000 fps with the the 155's, which is what the 13 twist is made for.

Gary has been at this game a lot longer than me, and everything he said is spot on. I shoot with some really good Palma shooters at my club. Most names that you would recongnize and most of them are shooting Varget. But be careful as the lots vary greatly and one lot will be fine and another will show pressure signs.

My solution to this, though I haven't witnessed it personally, was to buy a ton (24lbs) of Varget and mix it all together then I redistributed it back into the containers. So now I have 24lbs of homogenous Varget. Just be mindful of static and contamination as you mix and your good to go.
