Guys I hope you can help me. I want a rock solid 5.56 auto rifle, it will be my first most likely my only for few years at least. I have about a $16-1700.00 maximum budget but would like to spend less. A little history here. I am a shooting enthusiast. I like ARA & RBA benchrest rimfire competitions. I shoot a lot of skeet and I shoot NRA high power matches. At my club we shoot these NRA matches every month at 300yrd from benchrest. I shoot pistol silhouette matches and I hunt. I don't do the defensive stlye shooting sports. My reason for wanting an AR style rifle is purely to have one and to have a top quality one. Just for shooting targets, plinking and god forbid, to have it for what it's designed for. Anyway I've kind of narrowed my choice down to a Colt LE6940. I prefer the flat top for the sighting options; so flat top, a collapsible stock, and a 5.56 chamber are really my only requirements. My question is what am I paying for? Why do some AR's cost nearly 4 thousand dollars? I know the colt is mil spec but I also know that can be good and bad at the same time. I have zero AR experience so I'm in the dark on what these differences are on what seem to be very similar rifles. My worry is that Colt has a bid to meet when they build a weapon. Are there corners being cut to save money that could affect me? Is there a weapon out there that is superior for $3-400.000 more. Any suggestions for a good battle rifle and why would be greatly appreciated. If there is a good reason not to buy the Colt, I'd like to here that also. Thanks guys in advance for suffering a semi auto rifle newbie.

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

While there are a few dickfaces over at M4carbine.net you can do your research there more effectively.

That being said for the money for a 6940 I'd get a daniel defense.
Same quality firearm with a much better rail system.

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

Thanks alot I will check out the Daniel Defense. Not really wanting to deal with dickfaces however.

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

Are you going to use this new rifle in Battle?? IS that why its a Battle Rifle??? THis is a better question to ask in the semi-auto rifle forum...but hey maybe the answer to your question is in one of the 400,000 other threads, asking this same question...and you guessed it..they are all in the semi-auto forum...imagine that!!!

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

My bad Stan, sorry I screwed with your sensibilities. Is an AR not a battle rifle? You've got a problem with that I see. Being an anonymous douche on the internet says a lot about you Stan. No I don't plan on using the rifle in BATTLE as you put it. Fellas unlike Stan I'm not a full time armchair sniper. Sorry if my question was posted in the wrong area. Feel free to move along. Stan what's up with posting that pathetic gun collection in your signature. Is that supposed to make your dick longer. If so add some guns cause you're looking like a shriveled up juice head here.

I take pride in being an armchair sniper!!! And yes, another term for AR is battle rifle...but for mall ninjas only!!!

There is a Mall Ninja in my family, my wife. So I guess it's all good if I happen to call an AR a battle rifle. There may be a gun out there that is not an AR that I'm not aware of. Looks like you've spent quite a lot of time here in the last year. I'm sure you can get me up to lingo. So Stan just so I don't get trolled by you again what's the proper term for a battle rifle when not specifying one particular style of rifle such as an AR.

No doubt. Looks like Stan has some kind of gay gun porn fetish. Whatever, I guess you get all kinds on the internet. Where do you even find a picture like that.

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

Every one of your dumbass questions can be answered by simply searching through the threads on here. You come on and ask a retarded question... Lets see here....

First, you ask a question about a "battle rifle". Why sound like a douche, and just say AR?? Or if you aren't interested in an AR, either 15 or 10, state that rifle buy it's actual product name. I'm sure theres a reason for all of these comapnies to distinguish their product instead of being called "battle rifle 1", "battle rifle 2", and "battle rifle 3".

Next, you ask about the Colt LE6940... Well here let me help you. These are link to threads, on this site alone, that will help you on your decision whether the Colt is a decent rifle or not. And if these don't solve your question I'm sure ARFCOM will help you and will tell you all you need to know about the semi-auto world, and what will fit you best. But here are the links on Snipershide:

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2362712#Post2362712

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1594553#Post1594553

And finally, if you are going to last on here... you are going to need thicker skin to know when someone is fucking with you. When you go into instant defensive mode and start being a whiny little bitch and try to insult the members on this board, it opens up the flodd gates and I can promise there have been a few members who's skin just wasn't thick enough. Please take these few words as a friendly suggestion.... Use the search function til you run out of shit to search... Its there for a reason.

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

Big ray ray,

Awesome post count!

Before you go shouting your mouth off at members of LONG good standing, read. Listen, and only then speak.

The good Lord gave us 2 eyes, 2 ears and only 1 mouth. Meaning it's twice as important to listen/read/watch than to speak.

Take the advice given above.

Oh, and the clue to this site is in the title. SNIPERSHIDE. Which means that we are predomininantly interested in extreme real world rifle accuracy at long range. Not 2MOA assault rifles. And NO, I do not consider the AR15 to be a "Battle Rifle".

It's good for what it is, but it ain't neither a 'Battle Rifle', nor a sniper rifle.

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

I wouldn't say a little more than 1 year is "LONG" good standing.

However, the new guy needs to buck up and turn that frown upside down!

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

You can get a reliable AR for a lot less than 1700. S&W has their issues pretty ironed out, they initially had some problems with out of spec gas tubes. I bought one, with a $100 rebate, and it cost me less than 700. Its easy had 2000+ rounds through it already and runs like a swiss watch, no issues at all

If you just want a rifle for plinking and the worst case scenario a pretty basic AR will accomplish that. If you want a Daniel Defense go for it, real nice gun, but given what you plan to use it for its probably overkill. The money you save on the rifle can be used for optics, magazines, and ammo. Don't neglect the other startup costs of owning a rifle like an AR and blow all your cash on the rifle itself.

hmmm, so if you have a high post count you are more entitled to behave like and asshole than someone with less than a dozen.

Your culture is more interesting than mine

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

Damn Jason, rough crowd is an understatement. I hate to see this forum turn into this kind of crap.

I'd have never stayed here if I was treated like some newcomers are today when I joined.

Everyone started somewhere!!! I think more often than not, it is far forgotten by many here.

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

I think we need to seriously have a committee with Frank. This seems like a serious gap in the Rules. We need to institute a new one. If you have at least five times the post count of the OP, you are allowed to be a complete ass jack with impunity.

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

Here's my take on the OP's question and all others like it.

Yes, it's been covered before, but there are new guns released everyday so searching and getting a year old result won't help. The guy asked a good question, he was articulate and included good info on his experiences, budget and actual thoughts on a rifle. The site has answered every question you can think of at least 5 times, if we aren't open for new questions and discussions then we should shut down the new post option and just let everyone search the archives for the answers they seek.

In closing - The OP asked a good question, be nice to your fellow members.

Questions like - What's the best scope, what's the best rifle, does my sling need to match my pack, what's the best bullet for zombies and SHTF, how can I camo my airsoft, etc etc.....swing away, have fun with those guys. Good questions, like the OP asked, answer them or just leave it the hell alone.

Ray, I too would look at DDM4's, there are a few variations. Check out their site to see them all.

I like the V1, under $1200, leaving you some cash for an optic. For a red dot the Aimpoint T1 is very nice for a scoped option then I'd look at the SWFA SS 1-4's.

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

my advice, look at piston ar platforms. get one that has a piston system that is easy to take apart and clean. POF has been my favorite so far by a long shot. lil more spendy, but, you will not regret it.

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

one question, what possible down sides are you talking about with mil spec?

"I know the colt is mil spec but I also know that can be good and bad at the same time"

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

Stan has been banned for 3 days. Anyone else want to be an asshole to a new poster? You can go to. The whole jump on the new guy group around here has just been issued it's first and only warning. We see anyone else doing it and the bans will happen. No warning. Got it Skankster? VeerG? Any of you other guys who spend more time in the Bear Pit or Maggie's Drawers posting stupid pictures than shooting or posting on shooting got it? It's done.

So.......... What is the best scope, gun, and SHTF/zombie killer ammo?

OP, I would say to build your own to your feel. You should be able to get everything for about what you would spend on one that you may or may not like. Start with a DD barrel and RRA receivers

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

To the OP,

Here's something around your price range:

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2202139

DMack has posted a lot of good info on this model and it's big brother. I don't know him, but he runs these hard enough that I'd respect his opinion on the subject. If I was doing it over again I'd look at the 116 model.

I don't want to drag the whole DI vs. Piston stuff into this. I've only built or modified my own, all DI.

Use the search engine in my sig line or just go back through the semiauto forum pages.

It wasn't just about this post. It's a general warning about what the other mods and I have been seeing recently. Stop it or leave. Easy choice and we will help make it if people don't want to follow the rules.

might wanna check out the ruger 5.56 line. they come with some good options to start with.

Where you shoot is a great place to start. There is usually someone that needs or wants to sell a gun. Plus you get to shoot it before you buy!

Thanks for the POF suggestion. I wish you hadn't done that because I've been wiping drool off my keyboard for the last 20 minutes. POF is definitely a contender. As far as my comment about mil-spec having plus and minuses. I was issued a pair of "mil-spec" boots when I joined the navy 19 years ago. Six years later I was sure I'd never wear another pair of $33.00 mil spec boots ever again. My comment wasn't to say milspec was bad. I was just wondering if there was higher quality out there that I was unaware of. Guys I'm sorry my original post caused such a ruckus. I got pissed when Stanswood jumped down my throat and it's in my nature to attack back faster and harder. For that I'm sorry. I may not have the post count or the nomenclature but I have been a member here longer than Stanswood has.

another +1 on POF. I have nothing but great things to say about the ones I have owned. If piston POF it is.

I dont know if you have your heart set on a piston gun or or side charger, but I have one of these:

It is a LAR grizzly 20 inch .223 precision operator. I love mine, and they are better priced than most. Haven't had any trouble keeping it sub MOA out to 1k (no wind of course) with 75gr Hornady's. The only thing I've done is thread the barrrel for a can and some paint. Take a look.

Re: Need Some Newbie Battle Rifle Answers

Thanks Rob01 !! Long overdue IMHO. My post count is low because I do way more listening that talking (read here almost every day) but we've been seeing <span style="font-style: italic">way</span> too much of that kind of crap. I left barfcom for that very reason.

OP: I agree with Jason, I thought your question was effectivly presented and and well reasoned (although probably better suited to the semi-auto forum.) I haven't seen anyone mention Bravo Company and I'd strongly recommend you give them a look either for components or a complete rifle. You can't go wrong with Colt, for AR15s they have always been considered the gold standard, but as others have said I think you can do as well for considerably less $$.

A great way to start would be to combine one of Bravo's complete uppers with a self-assembled lower. It is remarkably easy to assemble your own lower with the most basic of hand tools. I built my first lower with a carpenters hammer, pair of regular slip-joint pliers and a nail set. Heresy to some, I know, but it worked and that lower is still a part of my primary 16" Middy many, many rounds later. I had actually intended to get a "proper" set of roll pin punches and all the other AR15 builder must-haves but when my lower parts kit arrived in the mail I took a look at the parts and the lower receiver and just started putting things together. It practically built itself, it really was that easy!

BTW here is a link to "The Chart" an invaluable AR15 resource IMHO.
