I was wondering what the best color BDU's would be to start with. It will be mostly woods and grass fields with some urban areas. Lots of green in the woods for most of the year. Also I was looking at the bushrags site and was wondering what color jute I should pick. This is for work, but I am having to pay for it so I want to get it right the first time.

Re: Need to build a ghillie

Start with a lighter base. Reason being, it is always easier to make a light item darker, then it is to make a dark item lighter. Catch my drift?

Try to use DCU's or something similar. If you find yourself in an area with darker veg it will be easier to add veg to blend in. But on the flip side, a dark green ghillie with light color veg will stand out more in a lighter area.

If you only have a dark base to start with (BDU) just take some spray paint to it to lighten it up.

Re: Need to build a ghillie

I would suggest starting with a desert bdu base, or a tan bdu, or an acu/abu base, as you can go darker if needed. use a tan canvas for the front of the suit if wanted. I would also use mostly natural burlap with a mix of darker browns and maybe some light greens.

Re: Need to build a ghillie

I got an ACU. I wanted the desert digital or multicam, but the army surplus didn't have desert digital. The multicam was twice the price of everything else, so I chose ACU. The color of my eberlestock is unicam digital. That color would have been perfect but I guess bdu's aren't made in that camo scheme.

Reinforcements on the front of the uit. Chest, legs and elbows/forarms. I Usually use 1000d cordura, but 14oz duck cloth or 500d cordura would work as well. It makes the suit stronger and more comfortable with low crawling. The suit will last a lot longer with the skid on it. If oyu use duck cloth, you do not need to sew it, a shoogoo will stsock to the back of it, but with the cordura, it has a coating on the back that glue will not stick to, so it will have to be sewn.

Yeah, I'm going to put that on there. Not sure where to get it though. I have been trying to find everything locally so I can start putting it together. Might end up getting everything online.

Re: Need to build a ghillie

Do you put your ghillie over your uniform? Should I get bdu's that will fit over my clothes? I bought some pants yesterday that are too big but that would probably be ok if I put them over my BDU uniform. I guess I will sweat my balls off no matter how I do it.

Re: Need to build a ghillie

personal preference.
try both and see what you like.
i dont like a uniform under my suit. i have much better movement when i have a normal fitting uniform on, then a larger suit over top my normal uniform.
although a bit of a lack of movement is a nice trade off when its cold out and you have to wear layers
