+1... That's how I did it to my McMillan A5. I know... It's fiberglass. Works the same though.
The Mill is certainly the way to go, though I have done the wood dowel with sandpaper wrap as well. Both will get you where you need to be but one will take a lot less time.
Umm... I guess I'm a little old school (only stocked with wood for 20 years fulltime), but they make these things called wood chisels (or you can make em yourself like I do) in all kinda shapes. That sandpaper is just for final cleanup unless you want to be there all week. Get it dug out and get on with it....
BTW You can open up a channel like that by hand way quicker than ya can set it up in a mill.
