Well im new here so first ill say hi everbody. And secound i have an AR. Well im upgrading it for long range tactical shooting, So i need Some help. i will be shooting out to 1000 yards. Caliber in 5.56X45mm.

What barrel length??? 20 or 24 inch????
What scope??? I wont pay more more that 1000 Dollars right now, and im liking the new SS 10x42 HD

24 in .308 with some good projo's
SS scope will be min at 1,000 with 10X

I will second the longer barrel. Squeeze every bit out of it you can. I would look at Kreiger for this. I recently started using one of their barrels in an AR platform. One of the best barrels I have ever used. It cleans up like a dream and broke in pretty easily.

For under $1K, I like the Zeiss. SS is a solid scope, certainly for the money.

It would help if we knew what caliber you are considering. For .308 you can get away with a barrel as short as 18" or go long.

For sub $1,000 have a look at the Sightron SIII line.

I'll throw in a vote on a 24" pipe, you'll need every last fps.I'd go with a 1:7 twist to stabilize heavy pills, a match grade barrel ( there are several good ones),and I'm going to say AT LEAST 14x on the scope, but a variable will make it more flexible.Those mentioned so far are good,also maybe you can find a deal on a used Zeiss,Mark 4,Burris XTR,Bushnell 6500 to name a few.Good luck and welcome aboard Scott!

I wouldnt try to shoot a 223 for any 1000 yard shot, unless it was purely for the fun of it. You will need a 24" barrel with a fast twist with an 8 twist being the slowest i would go, and more like a 7. I think 5-600 yards is more realistic goal for an ar rifle in the hands of a new shooter. Same thing goes for 600, long and fast! Good luck, and let us know how the 1000 yard shots go. Lee

Ive been shooting long range for about a year now. Im jest new to this form. I dont have a 308 bolt gun. But I have my AR and im willing to update that. All this will be for is shooting steel and paper, and a couple long range matches. i will post a range report when i get my rifle set up.

I have the DPMS Lr-308 with the Bull Free Float all factory for now and it shoots great but idk about the 1000 yards with it not my place but I would put my auto against any factory bolt any day

I am very on the same page I love all guns especially bolt and autos but for my all around i love my dpms all the ammo i need is in my clips and shoot as fast as i want and as accurate as long as I can hold it

Ive got a back pack loaded with full 20 round pmags. but if is a very small backpack

I've got somewhat that capacity but when i go hunting or just walking through the woods I carry two 19 rounds, that usually satisfies my itchy finger!!!

Wouldn't that be nice, like the Guns & Ammo Show or tactical Impact on TV, just get to run through hundreds of rounds and not pay a cent for them that's my dream job!!
