Re: Neil Armstrong passes away at the age of 82

Another hero passes from the earth.

Interesting that for the first time in the history of mankind, we are saying things like: "Remember when we used to go to the moon?" "Remember when we used to have a manned space program?" "Remember when used to be able to cross the Atlantic in a supersonic jetliner?"

I watched the moon landings as a very, very young kid. I remember it and, like almost my entire generation, dreamed of being an astronaut as a kid. I had the chance to work for NASA, working at JSC from 1992 - 1994. Was at KSC for every launch between IntelSat Capture mission and Hubble Repair Mission.

If you never saw a Shuttle Launch (especially from the JIPC/grandstands), you missed something amazing. Though my colleagues who had been around for Apollo said that the Shuttle was a firecracker compared to a Saturn V!

RIP Neil Armstrong. Great American.

Sirhrmechanic, your comment reminded me of this illustration. It's a bit depressing, but:

Hated to hear this today. Heard it on the radio news while detailing the Jeep. Sounds stupid, but I actually teared up. It seems like too many "good ol'" Americans, the ones I grew up wanting to be like, are dying off. God speed Mr. Armstrong.

Another great American is gone.

We are loosing our visionaries that drove this great nation. I can remember watching the landing and the return splash down. Every child wanted to be an astronaut then. It fueled our dreams, and gave us a pride.

Wasn't that cool back when? I still say it all the time; there is nobody cooler than those few men that walked on the moon. You just can't top that accomplishment.

And in a brilliant demonstration of today's medias' complete idiocy and detachment from both reality and historical context, the half-baked (or maybe fully-baked) reporters at NBC reported that Neil Young, first man to walk on the moon, died at age 82.

I mean... really? Really? How do you confuse a hemp-addled Canadian, Farm-Aid, toy-train-collecting, Chevy-addict, Kent-State apologist crooner whose voice can be used as a substitute for in-heat cats.... be confused with Neil Armstrong? How do you manage that? How?

Sorry for the rant. I just find it incredibly insulting that the mistake could have been made in the first place.

Cheers,

Sirhr

PS. Ok, I like a lot of Neil Armstrong... er, Neil Young songs. But, damn... Really?

Taking chances; what we as a Nation once did.

Some did, aome didn't. Neil Armstrong did.

We're running out of Americans who are willing to stand up and take the chance so the sum total of human accomplishment can be advanced.

He wasn't just a hero for a Nation, he was a hero for an entire species.

We are diminished by his passing...
