My son just had his 4th birthday. He is not the biggest kid his age but he loves to shoot my 22 so I bought him a Crickett, hoping that it would be small enough so I could start teaching him proper technique. Crickett was still a little too big be he was still excited! I ordered a new stock and modded it for his tiny frame

Awesome. My son is five, and I purchased a cricket last year for him. Triggers are rough.....but damn does it teach you trigger control! I noticed that he was getting frustrated and having difficulties at the range. I picked up the scope rail and the cricket mil-dot scope for him with the agreement that he has to alternate range visits between the irons and the optics. Easier to keep the momentum than deal with frustration, and keeping it fun is the name of the game.
Went to the range myself and sighted it in, and etched the rear sight post with a battery operated dremmel, and marked the rail as well so I can swap back and forth relatively easily.
My son is having a blast, and I hope yours has just as great of a time!

We're just shooting cans and knocking stuff over for now to keep it fun. When he starts to think it's too easy then we will back up and at a certain point I'm sure he will want a scope like dad. I have an old model 62 that I usually use around him that has irons so he doesn't get distracted. Now I just have to sep up or 1930's shooting gallery and then he will really have a blast!

Any suggestions for a front sight? I am going to have to remove the one that is on it to get the threads right and I really don't care to much for the one that is on it.

Re: Never too young or small

I have seen front sights for the Ruger Mark II/III installed on a cricket. If the threaded hole in the barrel is going to be compromised by threading, you will probably have to get a new hole drilled and tapped, or affix a standard sight. The reason my buddy put the Ruger sights on, is he could get differing heights. I believe they are Tactical Solutions, but don't quote me on that. Also a good point, the cricket scope rail uses the rear sight mounting for rear support.

That young man looks like he could be useing his left eye.
I have a grandson who shot like that at 4 years old, now he is 7 and ole gramps got him a Savage MKII left hand bolt for Christmas this winter.
As small as he is, just keep it fun, you have some time and he needs to grow some to work it all out.

This is the coolest picture. He looks tickled to be shooting like daddy......

He shoots like that because I make him keep his cheek on the stock. I am working on a raised cheek piece for him because he is right eye dominant, and is always wanting to lift his head to use his right eye. It's a work in progress.

Kudos brother, I learned with a stevens crackshot rolling block. Spoiled my daughter though, had her on my canned m4 22 conversion at age 7... wants me to paint it pink....
    uggh

I can't see the viseo due to firewalls at the office. Did you solve the check weld issue? Heck, put some foam and duct tape it on so he is shooting in the correct position!

Great stuff... you get 2 snaps and a pat on the back!!

That kid'll be outshooting us old guys in a couple years!

Re: Never too young or small

I haven't done anything about the cheek weld yet. He is doing ok in the sitting position. Prone is where we are having a little problem. When I get off the road this fall, I will bend an aluminum adjustable cheek piece for him, and have some canvas sewn up to cover it.

Nice job with the cricket. I have two boys, four and five. I'm not sure what to do with the oldest. He is for sure left eye dominant but, bats at tee ball with either hand, writes with his right hand. Now my four year old is gung-ho and went dove hunting this weekend. He shots holes all in a shotgun shell box with his daisy. Great job and post.
