After shooting my 168gr to 800 and 1000 a week ago i found out why they say the 168gr sierra is a bad idea. So i went home got some 175gr sierra and started load development and this is what i got on the 2nd try.

45.5 gr Varget
Fed 210 match
175gr Sierra HPBT
Hornady match brass

This was 6 shots Last 2 i shot through the chronograph and got 2743 then 2743 again.

"[45.5 gr Varget

175gr Sierra HPBT
Hornady match brass"

That is a very impressive group. I am guessing 100 yds? Makes me want to revisit 175 SMK. 45.5 seems to be a pretty stout load, way more then listed in the Sierra manual.

Re: New 175gr load development

My 308 will shoot the 175's like that .25-.35" (5 shot 100yd) but the 168 are crap at well over .75"-1.25"...my 300WM shot the 175's OK but the 168s under .5 go figure...both guns are Savage 110 heavy barrel tacticals

NICE GROUP...

Re: New 175gr load development

Although impressive, the load is .5 grains over Hodgdons limit for Varget. I would not advise any new loader to exceed the manufactures specified limits / saami specs. You may be a seasoned loader, but the new guy searching for a recipe may want to try this load in their SAMCO converted Spanish Mauser and have a bad day.

I have played with hot loads in the past, and there is usually a node just over the limit. In the long run you risk damage to your rifle, and your brass life (especially primer pockets) will be limited.

Re: New 175gr load development

I do love the 175 SMK and the Varget combination, and my savage consistently shoots them into .5-.75 groups... They have done good for me and Varget is a very good and consistent powder...

Great Shooting!!!

Re: New 175gr load development

Thank you roggom you are correct and i should have stated what this load is and to approach with caution and to only use in modern fireams. I have been reloading for about 12 years now so i do have some experience but we all are still learning.

Re: New 175gr load development

Same here. 175 Smk only thing my gen sees. I get .75" 10 shot groups. Win brass fed 210m and 45gr varget. On the front of the can of varget it lists 46gr max load. For a .308 and 175 Smk.
Nice group.
