Gents,

My "budget" .300 Win Mag gets it's barrel screwed on tomorrow. I'm using an AMTU taper Douglas Premium XX Air Gauge tube on a pre-64 Winch long action. The whole think is going to be bedded into a laminated Winchester Marksman style stock. For now I'm going to put my SWFA SS 10X on it to see how it shoots. If OK, I'll put it into a McMillan stock.
The rail is a Badger Ordnance 20 MOA model. It will be interesting to see how it shoots.

It will come to about 17-18 pounds "all up"!

Pics as soon as I can bed the darn thing.

Anyone with good .300 Mag load data I'd love to hear from you...I'll be using 190 grain SMK's for now.

I'm pretty excited to see how this is going to shoot, although break-in is going to be a PITA...;-)

I like the smk pretty good but look into the 200+ grain Berger and the 208 gr amax. Great bullets. Cool to see a pre 64 being used, everything nowadays is so tacticool you don't see the classics as much anymore.

I have a Douglas barrel on one of my 300 wm's and it's a laser...very impressed with the barrel

I have nothing for the 190's as I don't shoot them but you may want to search some post by aimsmall as he has quite a few loads posted up of his load data on the 300 wm.

Good luck w the build.

Check out aimsmall here on hide...he has posted up quite a few 300 wm loads

Also make sure u load down my loads for safety to start....may work different in your build and may be a little hot but I have no pressure signs

I completed my .300 Win Mag LR 2 months ago. Best hunting load to date, .319 @200 yards, through the Kreiger 26" barrel uses 210 gr Berger VLD Match Hunting seated .020 off the lands with 75.5 grains of H1000 using a Federal 215 M primer. Most accurate load to date, .239 @200 yards, is 200 gr. Sierra Match King seated .040 off the lands with 73.6 grains of H4831 using a Remington Magnum primer. Hope this helps.

190 grain Sierra MatchKing behind 69.0 grains of H4831 works well in mine. ChadTRG (hide member) recommended it. Of course... work up.

Gents,

Got bad news today. The 'smith that chambered the .300 short chambered it and never tested it. Needless to say I'm waiting on a new reamer from Dave Kiff so I can rectify the problem. Wait time for a new reamer is 4-6 weeks. Grrr...

Still, I'll have time to finish the stock while I wait.

I hate to butt in but I'm building a 300 win mag just for long range hunting starting off with a model 700 bdl action with a Douglas barrel here soon. I have question I've ordered a bobby hart acu block long range stock for this gun everything sets in stock perfect but when I tighten the set screws in the barrel shifts to the right side of stock can anyone help me out with this?

nostep,

Try torqueing the screws to a uniform tension...say about 15 ft lbs and see what that does for you. A call to the manufacturer might be in order and they may be able to help you. I'm not familiar with the stock design so can't really help beyond that...good luck!
