I am finally breaking down and buying my first AR. I wanted to know what should I do to "break it in".

Besides punching the barrel with a clean patch, and lubing the BCG, you should be good to go. For the first 2-300rds, make sure to inspect and relube the BCG just to watch for abnormal wear/and keep an eye on the carrier key bolts. (a non issue if correctly staked) If you are planning to shoot steel case ammo, keep the chamber clean.
Once I've done this with a new AR, depending on its use, I may only clean the BCG every 500rds or so. But, I never skimp on proper lubrication.

John Noveske, arguably one of the premier barrel makers adds a "supplement" to his rifles and barrels which essentially says that although there are many who believe there is a certain "ritual" of rifle break in, there is no empirical data to support the need for such efforts. That said, copper wash it for the first 2 or 3 range sessions and after that you're GTG. You probably wont see optimal accuracy for 150-200 rounds down the tube.

Clean the chamber before and after shooting the rifle.
Clean and with grease lubricate the bolt carrier group before and after shooting the rifle.
While you're at it, pull a snake with Kroil applied to the first few inches through the bore, chamber to muzzle, straight out, before and after shooting the rifle.
Before firing, with a chamber rod and cloth-wrapped brush, snake, and organic de-greaser, remove oil from the chamber and bore remaining since cleaning.
If this isn't done right, don't do any of it. Really. Just shoot the rifle, but your rifle WILL malfunction, your rifle WILL be unreliable, your rifle WILL wear out sooner, so learn how to do it right.
A good reference is www.zediker.com. Cleaning and Maintenance.
