Been lurking on this site for almost two years. I have been dieing to shoot long range rifle, but unfortunately I live in the Chicago area, and we all know how terrible of a gun state Illinois is. Well, I found a club about 65 miles away that will allow 600 yards, so I finally decided to get started in long range shooting. I got the 700 5R in .308 and I am saving the coin to buy the scope/bipod and everything else I'll need by March. So far I'm leaning toward the new Bushnell HDMR.

Any comments are appreciated/suggestions are appreciated guys.

Re: New baby 700 5R

the HDMR and Super Sniper 5-20 are good choices for the money. A lot of people, me included, dislike the 5r's stock for prone shooting. You may want to upgrade to a more comfortable stock if you end up not likin it.

Re: New baby 700 5R

Funny you mention stocks. When i first brought home the rifle, I noticed a small crack in the bottom of the stock. I didn't think it would degrade the performance of the rifle, but I wasn't happy with it as I bought it brand new from a local store. i contacted Remington about it, but didn't hear back from them. I went back to the store where I bought it and they immediately swapped the stock on it with another they had in the store. I was very impressed with the store's actions. Its nice to see customer service like that.

Then about a week later, out of the blue, UPS dropped off a package at my house. It seems that Remington sent me a brand new stock but forgot to contact me or even let me know. I was shocked and happy to say the least.

So now I have two stocks and I am definitely interested in a new aftermarket drop in stock. I have been looking at the AICS 2.0 and the Whiskey 3 chassis as well.

Here is the pick of the new stock. I'm definitely looking to sell this now and when I'm ready for the after market stock, I'll sell the one on the rifle.

Re: New baby 700 5R

Very cool. I bought a SPS Tac in 308 this fall, and upgraded to a HS stock from the Houge. I didn't like the chin weld, so bought a Karsten cheek rest. I like it so far. Easy to mount, and works well in prone.

I bought a SS 5-20 off this site, and I wouldn't know what to do with any better glass. It's the only good scope I've owned, so I cannot compare much.

I'm also a member at ASC, but work will dictate me moving to IN in the next couple months. I'll miss the range.

Re: New baby 700 5R

That's awesome, how has ASC been for you? My buddy and I just joined this month. Sucks that its all cold and snowy at the moment, I'm hoping for a somewhat decent weekend to go play at the range
grin.gif

The main reason I was leaning toward the HDMR is because I think I want to get the Horus reticle. I'm new, so I don't have a preference yet. I watched that damn Magpul precision rifle video, and that guy really sold me on the Horus reticle. But, I'm listening to suggestions.

Re: New baby 700 5R

congratualtions on the rifle..Im not sure how you like it, but im not a fan of that trigger.. you could easily sell off the additional stock to fund a new trigger. a good trigger is such an important aspect to shooting.

Re: New baby 700 5R

Trust me, I have a list a mile long of what I want to do, but funding is another issue

Just bought 500 rounds of Federal 175gr from cheaperthandirt. What ammo does this thing like to shoot?

Keep all the comments coming!!!

do some searching on the magpul video and Horus reticle. There is a thread going in one of the marksmanship forums, forget which one though. Use the search function!

Re: New baby 700 5R

Welcome to the "newbe" 5R club. I'm a little further along than you, but not much. Been shooting pistols, for years, and just now got the bug for long range.Got the 5R about a month ago. Getting ready for my third range session. I'm working up different hand loads for her. Great advice on that, here. All the guy's are helpful. Saving me alot of time. My buddy also has a 5R. He got his best groups from Black Hills Match ammo. I pulled a Monarch 4-16, off another gun, for it. Seems OK, for the "learning process" Just ordered an 8-32 Monarch, to try. Didn't want to sink a ton, into a scope, until I learn this thing. The "nice ones", are pretty pricey. I've shot some different cheap shells through it, Federal, Winchester, etc. $12 a box stuff, and she does pretty well with it. The best group was with a light handload, I tried. 37.3gr. Viht-135, behind a 168 SMK. It was my first sight in session, at 50 yds. 5/16 hole, outside to outside. Second session, at 100,3/4 in. was my best, center to center. When ya set up your scope, don't forget the Loctite. My buddy's base worked loose, last session. Good Luck.

I'm just curious where this club is. I'm downstate IL, but might make the drive for a good club with a 600yd range.

That is the club I just joined. Reading up on their regulations, only members can shoot at 600(can't bring in a buddy for that) and you need to be certified by them before they let you shoot. They want to make sure you don't shoot over the berm and into the neighbors...LOL

Re: New baby 700 5R

Thanks for the input Josh. I just bought some Federal match ammo that was on sale at cheaperthandirt for just under $20 a box. I was also going to buy some Prvi Partizan to break in the rifle and to break myself in too. Once I get better, I plan on buying a bunch of different ammo to see what she likes. I hear nothing but good comments about the Black Hills ammo.

Re: New baby 700 5R

For factory ammo mine liked Hornady Superformance 178, and 168 TAP. the first time I shot the TAP I thought I was completly missing the target, but when I walked down I found all 5 went smack dab through the black dot in the center of the bullseye.

Re: New baby 700 5R

I have the same rifle and love it. Mine seems to do well with FGMM 168 for the time being. Finally added some padding to get better cheek weld. Was out shooting it yesterday up to 600 at a fellow Hide members place. I know everyone tells you to sell the stock, but I'd have to recommend trying it first.

Re: New baby 700 5R

Good job getting the fgmm 175 for 20 bucks a box, your rifle should like it. Recently ran a bunch of fgmm 168 through a 5r and was amazed how well it shot, sub .5 all day long. And with reloads varget pushing 175 as well past 700 yds. With the extra stocks you now have some great tradeing material.

I've really enjoyed the range. Great people, and they are walking a nice balance between an open mind on how to grow without losing the heart of who they have been.

I predict many fun days for you! Check out the practical rifle days too.

Re: New baby 700 5R

If you like how the 700 SS 5-R's shoot with Factory Ammo you'll love how they shoot with handloads. I was at the range with mine yesterday and with BHA Match Brass, 44.4 gr of Varget, and a 168 gr Nosler Custom Comp Bullet the groups all measured .250 or less at 100 yards. Best of the day was .191". Almost stock rifle, only change being a Timney Trigger. The X-Mark, that was stock, rubbed my finger when adjusted down for lighter pull due to the location of the adjustment screw.

Re: New baby 700 5R

5R and FGMM 168 and 175 were made for each other. When you get to the point where you may want to handload you should try to duplicate the factory velocity and load to 2.800 OAL. If you weight sort, uniform the pockets, trim to .001 for each piece, weigh powder to +/- .01gr, check run out to .01, you may get the same accuracy (but probably not better) as FGMM. I don't know how they do it....but they do.

where you are PASA park is the place for 600 yds 25$ per year, slow response to join, but the facilities are developed (covered line + pits) ASC is 540 for the first year and only the berms are complete

PASA sounds awesome, but according to google maps its 290 miles away from me. That's a deal breaker. Up by us who are close to Chicago, we really get screwed when it comes to any kind of shooting. ASC is pricey the first year, then its about $24 a month after. Its less than 60 miles from my house and they give you a key to the property which is really cool. Bristol range in Wisconsin is closer to me than ASC, but they want $30 every time you show up, so all things considered, ASC is not too bad.

Yeah... you will want to ditch the trigger as this poster did. it drove me nuts. IMHO the xmark triggers are shit, and not worth me capitalizing. I replaced mine with a Jewell. It's like shooting a completely different rifle. Most of the 5Rs have a throat as long as a porn star. Handloading will improve things for you. COAL on a round with 175SMK to the lands on my 5R is over 3.080"s!!!

Whats the point in that? Remington has apparently hired Lawyers to cut the chambers on the assembly line.

Re: New baby 700 5R

I'm not going to change the stock or trigger until I shoot it as is first. Still waiting on funds for scope and rings. Hopefully that will happen next month so I can start shooting by the beginning of March. Most likely will swap out the trigger shortly after first time out

178 amax to 175 SMK, not the same profile, oal to the lands could be that different in the same rifle

I totally agree with you....it is what I did with my 5R. I have had it for 2 months now and knew I wanted to make some changes like the stock and the trigger but decided to wait until I got it out to the range to see how well it performed. Here are my results from my first trip to the local range (after zeroing the rifle):

R700Milspec5R_ResultsSummary_30Dec2011-1.jpg

My rifle is currently at the "smith" getting some work done. It will be back in my hands in about two weeks followed by a trip to the range to see how much better the Timney trigger helps to tighten those groups. I am shooting factory 168gr FGMM but also have 175gr FGMM to try. Not into reloading yet so those will have to do for now.

Enjoy your 5R as much as I am mine!
