New Barrel for .223 LTR - Suggestions?

Hi All,

I'm thinking of getting a new barrel put on my LTR, but have little to no clue about the choices that are out there. I was hoping some of you more experienced folks could make a suggestion or two if I give you the base criteria:

1. I'd like to start thinking about shooting the 75 grain Hornady A-Max in this rig - is there a twist ratio and length that you'd recommend?

2. Is there a compromise, in terms of twist and length that would deliver good accuracy with the heavier bullets and still deliver decent (hunting) accuracy with 55 grainers?

3. If I ask the barrel manufacturer (Krieger, Shilen, etc.) for a .223 barrel, am I still going to get the long throat length that I've encountered on my Remington - do you have to request a shorter throat, or will a new barrel from a custom manufacturer default to better tolerances than the factory barrels from Remington?

Thanks for any thoughts, suggestions!

Cheers,

Russ

Re: New Barrel for .223 LTR - Suggestions?

Usually you buy the barrel and have a gunsmith cut the barrel down to your desired length and crown it. He will also chamber it for your 223 caliber.
You might want to let the gunsmith know if your going to reload or use factory ammo as this might help him decide the best reamer to use for your rifle.
They are several top notch gunsmiths here on the hide who can help you with your questions.

There are at least 6 different chamber reamers for 223/5.56*45 so go do the research on the net and figure out which one you want--which depends on what you want to shoot.....

As to twist, don't get anything slower than 1:8, 1:7 if you want a go at the real heavies (90 gr-ers).
