Is it a mistake to have a barrel threaded and put on a late 80’s rifle to improve both precision and accuracy without any truing of action? I’m getting a 30 cal Bartlein m24 blank for a great price and I’m looking at having it put on my old 30-06 M77 (Tang safety) With components being impossible to find for reloading I’m not going over to .308 win but staying with what I have components for. Use for hunting and steel out to 1000 yards at local range. My first barrel change .

I would do it. I have a bone stock M77 308 Varmint from the 90’ that shoots great! Sub 1/2 MOA I used it for prone matches.
I also have a gun I built from a Gunsite Scout, put the action in a Ruger laminate police stock, Rock Creek M24 contour barrel. Best 5 shot group measure .185” @ 200 yds. The gun is stupid accurate!
Both guns bedded barrels floated. I don’t think you can “true” old Ruger actions??
They are square castings that are heat treated.

I have yet to see any documented case of blueprinting an action making it shoot demonstrably better. Are there actions out there that are wonky/fucked from the factory that could use it? Yes. Are they common? Not at all.

The barrel blank, chamber job, and chamber dimensions all matter much more.

This^^^^^^^^. Don Geraci is a National Bench shooter and he says the same, barrel blank, chamber, decent bedding and you can make a tomato stake shoot well. You also need to have great skill sets and ammo.

That opens another topic.. gunsmiths and chambering. I went int the local shop and asked approx price for chambering and threading both ends installed on action, took the guy a trip to the back and several minutes to answer what I would think was a simple every day question. First impression was to wait and ask you guys on here. Send off to have this done? That’s what I’m thinking tight now

A good barrel job will run you $300-475 not including cost of barrel.

Lots of great places to get a barrel done.
If they have to think about pricing I’d be leery.

Sounds like he doesn’t do the work himself. Probably calling the machinist he uses.
