New Build Questions

I am getting ready to build another gun and have a couple questions. This gun will be in 300 mag, and I think I will be using Hornady A max 208 grain slugs through a 24 inch bbl. I will be building it up on a Surgeon action. My question is what taper barrel should I use, and is 1 in 10 twist rate good for this bullet weight. Also, I looked at the J Allen stocks at SHOT this year, and kinda leaning in that direction. Any thoughts or comments on these stocks? My other gun uses an AICS, so I'm kind of in the air on weather to go in a different direction or just stick with the AI.

As for taper/contour, it's all about weight and how much you're looking to incorporate into your build. The actual "purpose" of the rifle usually determines how much it needs to weigh and the barrel is the primary ingredient in determining that weight. If you know what barrelmaker you're going with, I always recommend talking to them directly before placing your order, same for twist. The purpose of the gun would help with your questions. Is this a hunter or precision long range rifle?

Sorry for leaving out the purpose of the gun. It will be a long range precision rifle, and I will be using a Bartlien barrel. My other gun is .260 on a Surgeon action with a medium palma Bartlien tube. For this build, I wanted something to get me out and beyond 1500 yards.....I was told by one to go with a heavy palma barrel.

...beyond 1500 yds? Yeah, Heavy Palma or Tactical AMU or similar, the heavier the better for that kind of shooting. I would call the Bartlein guys and get their two cents as well....good luck, sounds like a cool build.

Heavy palma wouldn't be a bad choice but it will be a 30" barrel...you could cut it down of course but with a 300mag, I'd leave it as is.
