No. A bone stock Remington 700 is the perfect place to start your new build. The 40X is simply a more expensive Remington 700 action that has been factory tuned. A blueprinted Remington 700 action will be every bit as good as any custom action that fits a Remington 700 footprint. These actions are simply copies of the Remington 700 action and as such can offer no advantage over a well blueprinted factory action. Of course you will have the privilege of saying you have a (fill in this weeks trendy brand action) and you will have spent a little bit more money to do so. But the fact is you will not shoot any better no matter what the custom action fans want you to believe.
HTH!

Actually, most the 40X actions arent much better in the blueprint category than the regular 700. The main advantage of the 40X is the availability of being a single shot. There are parts of the 700 that cannot be brought up to the custom status. Most all customs are stiffer and can yield better absolute accuracy due to the stiffness being a little better because of the smaller port cut. Although most customs fit the same stock as the 700, they really are not just a copy. Port cutout design, trigger timing etc is usually better. In ours, the extraction cuts are wrapped further around such that there is much larger area where the bolt contacts the back of the action for less wear and easier use. You really need to look at what both cost, look at resale and what features you want and decide. Dont let anyone tell you that a blueprinted 700 is THE SAME, or that you NEED a custom to be competive either. If you dont have a action already, the custom is usually cheaper and resales better. If you have a donor rifle, maybe the 700 route is cheaper, maybe.
