So they re filmed Das Boot. I guess it kinda needed an update, some of the familiar story is there but it's otherwise completely redone. The base at La Rochelle looks amazing and they sort of hint at the significance of it, both a nod to the historically minded and bit of background on it to those not. It's not about La Rochelle, but in a way it is a lot more relevant than it was in the original.
Lots of it is new, all new story with half taking place on land, half in the sub. Despite all the changes, the guy that gets his arm smashed with the torpedo is still in it. I do wish they'd kept the part where they accidentally fired one up inside the sub and out of the water with fuze/propeller mechanism screaming like hell. But the new mission it all revolves around is pretty cool.
The most glaring thing missing from the reboot, or remake, is the sense of absolute terror and dread being trapped in a damn can while hunted persistently overhead.
On second thought, they probably could have called it anything else --calling it "Das Boot" seems more a marketing ploy than an honest name. But it's still a good mini series worth watching.
