Hi all,

I have been reading and reading and reading as I get ready to purchase a new rifle and scope. I have been hunting and shooting all my life and am now going to see what shooting longer ranges (out to 800) is like. I came here to read reviews on optics (analysis paralysis) but have found so much more. I am planning on getting into a Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 CM but have yet to decide on the scope.

Anyway, I will keep reading and ask questions that come up....though I don't know that I have any questions that haven't already been asked :)

Welcome from Winterset.

Where do you shoot long range here in central iowa? I have been down to high lakes only once and think that is where i will go once i get my 6.5 set up. $$ is burning a hole in my pocket....i have $$ for the rifle but still saving for the optic. Excited to get it and get out there....hopefully before it freezes.

High lakes is the only range that I know of in the area. I have an APO SH Saber and Performance Center LRR both in 6.5 on order. Hopefully the Saber will ship next week. Lots of good help on this site. I don't post much because I can usually find what I am looking for using the search function.
Have you narrowed the optics down yet? I have an Athlon Ares and a Vortex Strike Eagle.
Where are you located?

I am the same, I don't post much because there is so much info here my questions are already answered. Even with all this information though, i have not really decided on anything yet. From what I have read, the Ruger Precision Rifle seems to get praise for a production rifle. As for a scope, I don't know. I wanted to spend < $1K on a scope and that list is long. As I was looking for glass it was the first time I had heard of Athlon....and now there are 3 on my list. I started this journey with the RPR and a Vortex PST II 5x25 in mind as my setup....but as I read more...analysis paralysis. I am guessing that will be what I end up with once i gather all the $$. I have the $$ for the rifle but not the rest yet. I may need to sell another gun. I am located in WDM so anything here in central Iowa. I go to Rangemasters, Butch's and high lakes. I used to be a member at the Ikes in Ankeny but that ended up being too much $$ for the drive and the limited times I used it. Might check out some of the other clubs and see if there is somewhere I want to be a member.

Have you received your APO SH yet? I still have not pulled the trigger on anything.

Not yet. The rifle was in test fire but failed the sub MOA standard so it went back into the shop. Hopefully I will hear from them today. It's frustrating having to wait so long but good that they won't send a rifle out that doesn't meet their standards.

i suppose that is a positive. the APO SH is the most expensive rifle on my list of potential rifles. starting from being set on a RPR to finding so many more options...dont know if i will ever get something. I suppose if i ordered and APO SH i would have time to continue to save for glass :)

I will be excited for you when you get it. let us know how it shoots.

You are welcome to come shoot it after I get it zeroed. I have a 100 yd range at my house.

What do you consider central Iowa? I've been all over the state..........welcome from a grumpy old guy from OP Kansas........

I am in West Des Moines. Pretty centrally located. I have shot down at High Lakes, over at the Ankey Ikes and some places in between.

I still haven't pulled the trigger on a new rifle yet, was waiting until the election was decided to see if I could afford it long term.

I have a number of rifles on my list starting on the 'budgeted' end with the Ruger Precision Rifle up to the 'over budget' BadRock South Fork. I am leaning toward the Vortex PST GII for a scope I think regardless of the rifle.

Will do. Waiting on taller scope rings. I also have a Thompson Center LRR you can try. I think the APO SH Saber is going to be hard to beat.
Well, my kid just got a positive test for COVID so the fam and I are quarantined for at least 14 days now. No shooting for me. Going to make it tough to sight in my new .450 upper before deer season.

Hope your family gets through this mess ok and you are able to sight in the .450 in enough time. I may get time to zero the SH Saber tomorrow.

welcome from delaware
raising berms is a noble adventure , and protecting those berms from steel targets is just an American thing to do
sadly my state has only one berm and its the city dump literately . I am sure there are others somewhere that a lucky few get to protect , just the lucky ones .

Welcome! Since you're in Iowa, Brownells has a lot of good glass on their showroom floor that's available to handle. Their MPO optic sounds to be the new standard (along with the Optika6 possibly) for the $1000 scopes.
