Nice looking rifle!

What ranges were you shooting? What load? What reamer was your chamber cut with?

I am really curious about velocities your obtaining. I have been struggling making my rifle preform past 600 yards.

I shot those at 100 yrd's shot out to 300 but at 300 it was steel and the groups were nice....That's as far as my range goes .....I was using RL 15 37.3 gr and 123's lapuas... As for the reamer you would have to ask kerry at GAP no clue...Sorry didn't chrono it....but in my PAI I get a little over 2900 FPS with the same load and 2 " more on the barrel
I also use 37.5 of varget with the same results

And it was hot 91 and 90% humdity......and no scope paint.LOL

Re: New GAP 6.5X47

Thats very similiar to my load. I am running 37.4gr of RE 15 at 2950-2975 with the 123 Scenars.

This load, for me, takes a big dump beyond 600 yards, and I seem to get excessive spin drift or some other phenomenon. With a dead still wind, I still have to hold about .25-.45 mil left wind with my 1/8 Broughton 5c.

I get easily .25-.5 groups at 100 yards consistantly, its really tight, but at 500 yards even, groups explode. I would love to hear your chronograph readings and longer range accuracy reports.

I am working with some 142 to see if I get better results, and hope yours shoots way better than mine does.

Re: New GAP 6.5X47

Also, my elevation changes from one day to the next. It has never been the same past 500 yards, anywhere from 4.4 mils to 5.6 mils, according to my data. Huge jumps, and to me that seems excesive.

I hope its my handloads or something else, not my rifle or chambering. I am wondering if there is some wierd harmonic issue with my long ass 28" barrel...

If you dont post here when you get out to 1k, I would love a PM from you with some of those results...

Please dont think I am dumping on your post, I am just looking to exchange a little information with someone who has been using this caliber and see what their LR results are.

Re: New GAP 6.5X47

My friend has a R700 built by Tactical rifles 26" bbl, uses RL15 & 130gr bergers uses a .002" jump. Hasn't taken it past 100 yet but at 100 5 shot groups are real tight. He has tried two different loads & both group the same. I think it was 37gr & 36.5gr of RL15.

Re: New GAP 6.5X47

Tuna,
I also shoot 123 gr scenars over Reloader 15. I'm using 37.2 grains with a CCI BR4 primer and getting 2,798 ft/s (22" barrel). I could load it hotter, but that load shot so well for me I never bothered going up any further.

Re: New GAP 6.5X47

Natty,
Thats the exact same load I'm using in my Stiller/Bartlein rifle. My barrel length is 25" so I'm getting about 2850. This caliber is extremely accurate. Usually I have to fiddle to get a good load but the 6.5 Lapua was right in there at the beginning. I've taken mine out to 1100 plus and its still grouping 1/2 MOA. Really love the 6.5's. I amost never shoot my 308's anymore.

I don't have a 6.5x47, and have no experience with it. I have been reading up on it and it's 6mm version, in anticipation of my first build, as they are two of the choices. I've spent more time on the Benchrest/F-class sites, trying to glean info, as that is my main focus at this point.

There seems to be some contention as to whether the case's small primer pocket can lead to inconsistent ignition or burning of the powder column - that the case capacity is at the edge of the small primers' ability to burn optimally. I wonder if one could form ten or so cases from .22/250 or .243 brass and see if the change to a larger primer/flash hole combination would lessen this problem. Would be interesting to test in your rifle, I'd think.

Re: New GAP 6.5X47

I am using Varget and the 123's with good results (approximately 2910 fps @ 80F). I don't experience the dramatic velocity swings you describe and my loads yield excellent groups at longer ranges.

If I were you, I would dump the RL15 and try other powders (Varget, N550)and see what happens.
