I'm jumping them .020 because of the mag.

And I have some RL-22 so I will give that a try.

Re: New GAP 7 WSM!! Ladder Test Update (6-13-10)

Nothing will outshine '22.

Don't fret vertical until you've fouled the bore, forget cleaning and pay attention to the chronograph.

I'm curious why you'd build a rifle that had a .020" leap inherent, from mag confines?

As opposed to (10) one shot groups,as a load "determination",factored upon their vertical dispersion.

For starters and humor reiteration.

Re: New GAP 7 WSM!! Ladder Test Update (6-13-10)

Oh and before you waste too much money on Berger 180's, try some 162 A-Max's over 65gr of RL22 and seat them just to the lands, dont jam them into the lands. With that load, I get 1/2 to 3/4 moa at 1K.

I'm a fan of Glen's metal, which would curtail my buying a longthroated/short COAL Custom, that mandated a DBM swap to sing. Which was the point.

Re: New GAP 7 WSM!! Ladder Test Update (6-13-10)

I tried out RL-22 tonight and it pushed just over the 2900 mark with 65 grains. Still no sign of pressure. 64, 64.5, and 65 were within 1 inch at 400 yards. It's probably not worth the fuss to try some RL-25 for that extra 50-75 fps. The RL-22 looks very promising.

Re: New GAP 7 WSM!! Ladder Test Update (6-13-10)

I believe the Seekins foot print is "thinner" than the Badger. The other issue is they don't seem to be available on a regular basis. I think they are worth waiting for as it is just what the WSM needs for the Berger VLD's. Glen could tell you for sure.

Re: New GAP 7 WSM!! Ladder Test Update (6-13-10)

Not the same footprint, but can be done. And Glen said the 5 rounders are almost ready, waiting on coating and assembly.

The rear bottom of the feed port (on the action) needs to be machined a little bit. Send the bottom metal and rifle to GAP, Im sure they can get it fitted in no time.

Re: New GAP 7 WSM!! Ladder Test Update (6-13-10)

Very nice rifle!
f.w.i.w...
In my GAP 7Wizzer, I'm running moly'ed 162 AMaxs from a Wyatt's box & M4 bottom metal. 2.975" feeds with room to spare & touches the lands. Already considered an upgrade to Seekins DMS in the future, as I like it well enough on my .243. Maybe when this current barrel goes south, but until then I'll survive...

Might could get more from '22, but I'm settled in at just under 3K from a 1:9" twist, 24" Broughton with 64.0gr H4831SC...

Looking forward to see how yours continues to shake out with RL-22. Its a beaut!

William is correct 66-67 grains of RL 25 or so, should net you closer to 2900

The Load you are using 64 grains of 4831 SC gets me 2880 in a 26 " barrel

Re: New GAP 7 WSM!! Ladder Test Update (6-13-10)

Well before I go out and buy some RL-25, does it really make that much difference pushing them at 2850-2875 as opposed to 2950? Trying to weigh out my pros and cons here because it showed some really good potential with RL-22 when I pushed it up to 2850.

And again, this will mainly be used for hunting and possibly a match or two until my other build comes in.

So anyone that has some insight to sway me one way or the other would be appreciated.

Re: New GAP 7 WSM!! Ladder Test Update (6-13-10)

No, 2850 will kill just fine

i shot my biggest buck with a 180g vld at a measly 2850fps at 500yds, wouldnt of mattered if it was that speed or 3k.

that load will also be great for matches and do just fine

Good to know

FK, good to know as well since I shoot a lot of 22 and don't have any 25 for the 7 BAT that's coming.

Re: New GAP 7 WSM!! Ladder Test Update (6-13-10)

dpreston,

thanks for the post. I was thinking of getting the same. What is the barrel profile, why did you decide to go with 7mm WSM, and how do you find the overall weight?

the barrel is a medium palma if I remember correctly. I went with the 7 wsm because the ballistics are phenomenal. A 180gr berger VLD flying at 2950 hits with authority. I hit a steel groundhog target at 900 yards and flipped it into the air 3 feet.

The overall weight is good. One of my lighter rifles coming in at 12 pounds. It doesnt recoil at all, and I dont have any problem carrying it around all day. Cant wait to test it out next month on some mulies and pronghorn!
