Just finished putting together our second new Savage 260 and a short report on it.

This is nearly identical to the way we did my sons. We've been shooting our long range single shot pistols at the 1000 yard matches the last two years with relative good success so we decided to venture over to a long gun for something different.

We put together two nearly identical Savage Mod 11 with HS-Precision pro stocks, 28" Shilen Select Match barrels, Harrells brake, his has a CDI bottom metal and mine has an Accurate Mag version. His is using a SS 5-20 and mine has my old Vortex PST 4-16 for now till I get a SS.

Didn't preclean, just screwed barrel on and assembled the rest of the gun and dropped the scope off one of my pistols on it.

Range time from first shot out of the gun till it's ready for a match on my gun yesterday: Bore sighted at 100 yards, 1st shot 3" left and 1" low, adjustment made, center wind and 1/4" low, adjustment made, dead center. cranked 1 full revolution up and shot, cranked up another full turn up and shot. Cranked down 2 full turns and shot. Used straight edge and perfect tracking and also return to zero.

Made adjustment for 200 yards. Shot turkey size target in head, moved over to small 2" x 4" swinger and center slightly low hit. Adjustment made and second shot center. Now I've got my 200 yard zero. Made 3/4moa adjustment and shot at a 3/4" hole in a manhole cover at 240 yards hit 1" low, let son shoot and he hit same place. Made adjustment up 1/2moa and bullet grazed side of hole but went thru, let son shoot and same thing only on lower side of the hole but still went thru. Moved over and head shot a 22 silhouette sized turkey at 240 yards. Grinned at son and put gun away and ready for trip to 1000 yard day at Rayners Range. End of break in prodedure

14 shots and all done. Will print out a JBM chart and could be ready for a match if we had to.

Both rifles were nearly identical with range sessions. No break in, we're using the same load that our pistols liked and he placed 3rd out of 56 shooters at his first match with his new rifle. I think we're gonna like these Savages, am finding they aren't really picky about what you shoot thru them. We can interchange 139 Scenars, Matchkings, Amax and our present favorite Hornady 140BTHP Match thru the first 500 and the Scenars and Hornady BTHP match the rest of the way out in a pinch at a match and still feel comfortable getting hits.

Son did shoot loads varying from 42 to 44 gr later his first day just to see how they would do and also over the chrono. None went over 3/4", 42.5 went .081", 43 opened up to .3 and 44gr went to .241. All would of been good but we went with 42.5 in all of our guns and it's been working great so far.

Break In procedure... man that has proven to be the source of a lot of threads on here but so far we've shot them like we stole them and never looked back.
