new gun, ordering ammo, where to start

Re: new gun, ordering ammo, where to start

How far do you plan on shooting? If you're trying for a 1000, 175's. 100yd to 6-700yd 168's. I stick to shooting 175's personally. Other people's methods will vary.

Southwest Ammunition is the place to buy ammo. Anything you want, they have. Good prices and accurate ammo.

If you had to chose just one...I'd get the 168gr...IMHO. Not sure what twist rate you have...I used to own a Rem. PSS, it had a 1:12" and it did well with 168's. My Rem. Milspec had a 1:11.25" twist and it really did well with 175's.

See if you can hook up with the group buy mentioned above...that sounds like pretty good pricing.

You can order from Palmetto State Armory, that's where I get my FGMM 175s. Without knowing the range you will be shooting at, it's tough to say what weight round you should go with. As far as ordering ammo, I've only heard good things about SW ammo from other Hide members

great, think im gonna try to order few boxes of each and just see what works out, cant wait till all my reloading stuff gets here

Re: new gun, ordering ammo, where to start

Actually I asked the question of LoneWolfUSMC and he answered it on Episode 1 of his "Mail Call Monday" series, but he considers one box of ammo a reasonable test to see if your rifle "likes" it or not. To get the most out of that one box, though, you'll have to be extremely diligent and have solid fundamentals behind the rifle or else you won't be giving it a fair assessment.

Re: new gun, ordering ammo, where to start

If doing one box of each, try two five shot groups of each on one day and try to do the same on another, trying to keep everything consistent. That'll give you four samples of each round. I would order two of each so you have extra's in case you need to verify, etc. Then you can use the left over rounds of the lesser for some positional shooting.

Re: new gun, ordering ammo, where to start

I'm running 168 Horandy match now, but i'm looking for cheaper alternatives, so I've got 4 boxes coming from southwestaummuntion. I'm going to try their stuff when it comes in, 168's and 175's. I'll take my time and see what diet my rifle likes other than the factory hornady ammo. this is just to get me through until i start reloading....
