still in debate on which route to go. feel like maybe see what others would do in my situation. 2 options, keep in mind dont have all the money in the world!

option 1; I have a remington 700 BDL 7mm rem mag. Take it and get the action worked on, new trigger and maybe new barrel or stock. Load up some 168 and 180 berger vlds as well as some 160 accubonds. gun will be used for big game out too 700 yards ish.

option 2; purchase a remington 700 sendero or 5R in a 300. win mag. take the little money i have after that and either action and trigger or maybe just the one for now.

this gun will be used for moose, black bear, elk and caribou out too 700 yards ish. i know both will work but the 300 will be just that little bit better on bear and stuff with the larger bullet.

what i want eventually is to have a long range mid weight tactical mcm A3 300. win mag or jump up to rum. and a light weight full custom gun for those long hikes. and if i go with option two, when the money comes around eventually i could have a mid weight tactical 300 and a light weight 7mm

Re: New gun

to me the best calibers start with the number 3....I say go for option number 2. Save your money and upgrade the 300 as you go.

This is can be expensive addiction...lol

Re: New gun

There is nothing that a 300 win mag can do better than your 7mm mag already does until you get to very heavy bullets and distances over twice what you're talking about.

You can't blue stainless steel. You can apply a spray-on finish like Duracoat or Cerakote. I used Duracoat on a stainless Remington 700 5R with great results. I've heard Cerakote is even better.

Thats what i thought! If i go route 2 i most likely get a Remington 700 Sendero stainless and get the action trued, and a trigger installed.

later on i will bed it in a mcm a3 cerekote its action black, get a 28" #5 or sendero contour brux 10 twist barrel, holland recoil lug,

Re: New gun

i like the 7mm over the 300. it will kill all you want in NA but not have as bad a recoil as the 300 with better BC bullets without getting into the 220+grain stuff.

if you are going to rebarrel then i'd look at the 7mm SAUM, which out of a long action can be setup for 180VLDs and get exceptional ballistics and around 3100 fps from what i've read.

Re: New gun

so many combinations Matt...you are prob back to where you started, either way I dont see a downside. Get some pics posted to whatever you decide. I love to see all the different blueprints.

You said it!! so many combinations! the more i think about it the more confused i get! I know what i want in the end and what i keep thinking is if i go the sendero route i will be wasting more money.

in the end i want a 300. win mag. The 7mm was handed down to me from my uncle and it will be staying in the family either way. I was originally going to send in the 7mm to get it customed and turned into a 300. win mag. Then i was going to leave the 7mm as is and buy a 300. win mag and custom it. Now im thinking why waste the money on a 300. win mag then custom it when i could buy a custom action and build a full custom.

Re: New gun

If you go the sendero route you will most likely find that the gun will shoot beyond your abilities with a good handload. The Remington SPS stuff can be worked into 3/4MOA most of the time out of the box and I have yet to see a sendero that couldn't get into the 1/2MOA range with a good handload right out of the box. I know everyone is a 1/2MOA shooter on the internet but for those of us that live in the real world, a 1/2-3/4MOA gun will do anything we need it to do.
