New guy from Norway

What caliber do you plan on as your go-to?

SubRosa
I'm thinking I'll build myself a 308 set. It's the cheapest to get in large quantities here and there's not really any ranges around me long enough that I really need anything bigger than that.

I currently have a rifle in 300RUM, picture attached, but I'm finding it a bit too expensive to shoot here.

Nice rifle. Is 300RUM primarily a European round?

Don't see much of that over here in the US. Looks a bit like 300 WinMag, with a steeper shoulder.

308W will do OK for me past 500m with Federal 168 and IMI 175 in 24" barrels.

300RUM (Remington Ultra Mag) is a U.S. round that has been around since 1999, but never really caught on. Similar to many other Remington introductions. I think that people were generally fine with 300 Windbag in that caliber.

Great hobby to get into! Start by defining your goal (competition, hunting, or just recreational). Prioritize a quality barrel and action, learn proper bedding, and don’t skimp on optics. Fit and consistency matter more than chasing the newest parts.
Than you for the advice!

Yeah I'm getting rid of the rifle I have and setting up something like what you're suggesting, a simple 308 that will allow for a lot of practice and getting quality parts, spending the money where it will make a difference.

I'm mostly just recreational. I'm technically a sharpshooter in the army reserves here, so it's a little bit me just wanting to keep my skills up to date. Proficiency has a very short expiry date after all.
One week a year just kinda doesn't cut it when I want to know what I'm doing properly.
