Hi guys just joined I've been shooting guns and reloading for probably about 5 years now. I am looking for something new I have the basic 223, 308, 243, 7 mag, 300 wsm, ect. I have been looking at the 6.5mm but I have no experience with any of them. Here's the deal I have 1600 dollars to put into this rifle. I already have a leoupold vx3 6.5 x 20 scope with Burris mounts. I really like the rem 700 but a rebarrel will be required to get to the 6.5 from what I've looked at which is not really a problem I just don't want a 2 or 3 month wait. I'm not limiting it to only 700 just stating I really like them. The gun will mostly be used at 500-600 yards max occasionally we do some 1k plate shooting but not often. I would also like to do some varmint hunting with it as we'll. I reload all my own stuff so the lack of factory ammo and such on stuff really isn't a problem. I've looked and read for a few weeks now but I'd really like some of your guys input also if theirs other calibers I'm not taking into consideration for what I'm wanting to do fell free to mention them I'm very open to anything just do not want a magnum or something with a lot of recoil. Thanks for any help guys

Re: New guy here need some help

Give Chad Dixon a call (http://www.longriflesinc.com/); RW Snyder would be a good choice too. They have good turnaround times on rebarreling rifles. I've heard good things about Phoenix Custom Rifles too (PCR)

For the most part, though, you need to live by this maxim: pick any two of the following: cheap, high quality, fast

Re: New guy here need some help

call dixon.

He got my rifle on Monday...it will be back in my hands by next Wednesday.

I had action/bolt tune, scope holes opend to 8-40, fit a new barrel (flutted and muzzle threaded), cerakote...not bad for a week turnaround.

cartridge choice? 6.5 is great...wish I had the funds for another rifle so I could get one.

Re: New guy here need some help

If you go the savage route, your budget is plenty for a fine rifle.

Most people who want to build off of a savage will buy a stevens 200 and replace barrel and stock.

Re: New guy here need some help

Savage actually makes a rifle already chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor I belive.

Did you know what cartridge you were looking at? 6.5 grendel, creedmoor, 6.5x47 lapua, 6.5x284? Personally I love the 6.5 creedmoor and have both a high end AR and a high end bolt gun chambered in it.

Re: New guy here need some help

savage LRP all day. i do believe they make it in a creedmoor and a .260. even a 6.5-284. very good accuracy right out of the box. and well within your budget. you wont be dissapointed. you can also contact fellow hide member bob goettel. owner of liberty arms LLC. in smithton PA. he is going to be building my wife a creedmoor very soon based on a savage action. turn around time is 2-2 1/2 weeks once all of the parts are in. Libertyarmsgunsmith.com.

Re: New guy here need some help

I haven't read anything bad about the Savage offerings in 6.5, but have never handled one myself so I can't peak for them from experience.

If you go the R700 route though, most definitely give Chad Dixon a call for the rebarrel. I sent him my 700P and a new 260 barrel, which arrived on a Saturday. I got a call on Monday morning to get my payment info and confirm my shipping address. I had a tracking number a few hours later.
