Hello everyone, this is my first post. I recently purchased my first rifle, a Savage 111. I know that's hardly a "PRO" sniper rifle but please bear with me. The rifle came in a package with some cheap Simmons scope. I am looking to upgrade to a more dependable piece of glass. I am looking for a good scope, preferably 3-9 or 4-12, as well as some better mounts and rings. ANY suggestions would be incredibly helpful.

P.S. - I do not consider myself a sniper, but I have been lurking your forums and everyone seems intelligent and friendly

Also...please don't embarrass me by pointing out my lack of knowledge, I'm merely your average teenager getting into shooting.

Trust me it goes down well

What cal is the rifle chambered in?

For me, a 3-9 is usually better suited to rimfires. Even so, having a little extra mag i find is usually more helpfull.

Unless your going for dangerous game up close theres no need to go smaller that a 3-9.

Depending on the recoil energy of your rifle, I would tend to place high recoiling calibers in the category of a higher end scope just for the peace of mind when it comes to a better build quality of the scopes tracking devices.

Medium to low recoil such as that exibited by .308 and smaller, you can generally get away with most scopes... I find that a shit scope breaks regardless of what its on.

I have found Bushnell ELITE scopes to be good value for money. The glass is clear and the warranty service seems to be decent. I also hear very little complaints about their products.

I have stayed clear of Leupold as recently they have been overtaken in the optics game by other manufacturers... that and i hear alot of people complain about a reduction in quality control. I study 6 six sigma principles and to me it seems like Leupold have dropped the ball too many times recently... But on a plus i hear their customer service is ok

you cant go wrong with high end scopes

Whats your budget?

CJ-

4-12 power is perfect for whitetails! I have used a 4.5 - 14 Leupold VX3 with Boone & Crocket reticle for the past 7 years or so. I have no experience with the Bushnell 3200 so cannot speak to that scope, but recommend a variable power similar to that. What I recommend is getting some decent glass, then spending more time and money on ammo and range time. Really get to know you rifle. Snap Caps are also a benefit to purchase, then you can practice squeezing the trigger at home. If you can have someone qualified/competent to help you adjust trigger pull on your rifle, an trigger pull of 3.5# is great for a hunting rifle. I recommend no lighter for a hunting rifle. Good luck and shoot often!
