And new gun.

I came across a good deal on some 175 grain SMK's that were pulled (I know they won't be optimum.) and for powder I have BLC-2 (2lbs) and some WC-844 (8lbs).

I have 500 bullets and more than enough primers, but I would like to make the most of what I have. In other words I would like to do as limited a ladder test as possible.

So where do you suppose I will find the best performance with these powders? At the lower end or the upper end?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

I asume you are loading for the 308win using the blc-2. I have been loading for the 308 for years and in the past loaded with 748win powder which is real similar to blc-2 and 175smk, the rifles that I loaded for all liked mid to upper end loads but by all means start low and work up and another thing is to consider the temp your going to be shooting in, they can be real temp sensitive. If you are using a upper end load and shoot in the heat you can run into some real "serious" pressures! I still load and shoot the 308 weekly, still using the 175smk but have changed my powder to varget mainly becouse it is not near as temp sensitive and have not looked back.

Yes it's 308. I have used Varget as well and 4064. I prefer 4064 for my bolt gun it gives better groups.

I guess I should have mentioned, I chose those powders and stocked them a while ago in anticipation for this set up. I am developing this load for a DPMS.

I am willing to sacrifice some accuracy for ease of ball powder in a progressive. I already found out this rifle likes virtually the same loading of 4064 as my bolt gun, so I will continue to load that load for accuracy.

I guess you know that H335 data can LOOSELY be used with WC844. Basically it gets you in the ballpark and you develop your own load from there.
That said, I've only used it in 223, but I found my node just below where it started to show the imprint of the bolt head in the headstamp of my brass--so I guess it was at max. If you use this powder and develop a max load, be sure to try it in hot weather before you load up a thousand.
