New guy questions

Hi I'm a brand new member with questions already. I'm getting started in semi long range shooting. I have been building my gun and so far this is what I have....Savage model 12 btcss in .223 my optics will be a Leupold vx3 6.5-20x40 with the adjustable objective and target dot reticle. I'm mounting the scope in burris zee signature rings. My only hold up is the base for the rings. I'm pretty set on a ken farrell base but I don't know which one to get,or a one piece or a two piece. Any suggestions on the bases and any other part of my set up? I am all ears to any suggestions or recommendations,Thanks!

2 words, One piece and blue loctite.EGW makes a decent base for the money.If you plan on shooting past 600Y you should get the 20 moa model.

Go with Warne,EGW or TPS. I've used all 3 and have great results with all of them. Get the 20moa base if you want to take the .223 longer distances.

Even if you think you will never go past "semi-long" range go with a one piece 20MOA base as it would be nice to have that extra 20MOA for future needs like a re-barrel re-chamber.

They are almost always the same price as well so there is no difference there. I got tired of spending a small fortune on bases in 1 piece picatinny format so I tried a EGW & it is a great piece @ a very decent price in comparison.

All of the bases mentioned are good equipment, from what I've seen. I know quite a few guys using the cheapo $20 Weaver bases without any troubles. I don't know how well they would stand up to abuse, but even the cheap Weavers are more than adequate for range or field work. I'm just not very familiar with the particular scope that you are working with, so one question comes to mind. If you do go with a canted scope base, will your scope have enough adjustment to obtain a zero at your chosen zero range?

Another vote for EGW. I've ran them on all my rifles and haven't had any complaints. I'll continue to use them too. Can't beat the price either. As far as rings, TPS seems like a good choice. I'll be upgrading my Super Sniper rings to some Seekins rings.

Thanks for all the info that's just what I needed to know....from the people that do know. So it looks like EGW in 20 moa. As far as my scope choice is it a good choice as far as price and features. The canted scope base is a base that will slope forward slightly. This will allow you to have more up adjustment so you maximize your shooting distance. Most people have recommended you get the 20 MOA version as will I.

Just get a EGW 20 MOA and call it a day. [that rhyme scheme was not planned]

I'm not a fan of Leupold, I don't like their scopes, I don't like some reviews i've read but I do love to hear that they have excelent customer service. Now to me this should be a requirement but it really does make a business shine over another who has crappy customer service and the same products. That being said there are plenty of other manufacturers who offer (IMHO) better scopes in the same price range. I would suggest creeping around SWFA and finding some good scopes on there that have good reputations on this site and going from there. If you're absolutly set on the Leupold then so be it. It should do what you want it to do and if it doesn't, from what i've heard, Leupold will take care of you.

Cool thanks for all the info! There is plenty of good info on here for sure. I'm waiting on income tax money so I still have time to do searching and reading and more reading lol and finally decide on my final setup. I have a little marlin 917vs in .17hmr with a nikon buckmasters 4.5-14x40 scope. It is a great shooting little gun but it wont reach out as far as I'm wanting to shoot....plus I wanting a new gun anyways haha.
