Well this is my first post on here but I have been reading all I can for a while.

I went to buy a spas tactical but ended up with a new 5R in .308
I read several reviews on here and all have been good so when I saw it I bought it.
But now I don't have a whole lot left for a scope and rail. So I have been considering the hawke sidewinder 30 and a 20 moa rail ? Will be using this as an all around gun "hunting and target" so would this be an ok set up are should I hold off until I get more funds for a better scope?

Thanks for any advice given.

P.s. I don't think I will be shooting past 500 to 600 yards

OP, if your sure you wont be going past 5 or 600 you shouldn't need a 20 MOA rail. Plain ole' picatinny base would do fine.

Can you tune a 20 moa rail to shoot 100 yards? I like to do things right the first time and if I can get away with buying one rail I would prefer it. The guy at the shop where I bought my gun said get a 20 moa and jb weld it on? Is this true? Seams a little permeant to me

If you try to use a standard rail, you'll run out of adjustment room on your scope to make 1K yds.

However, since your shooting max 5-600 yds, a standard picatinny rail will do nicely.

then get some decent rings, and a SWFA Super Sniper scope, and you'll have a great platform to learn on.


Also, the guy at the shop is an idiot. When people suggest ghetto-rigging shit with duc-tape and JB-weld on a precision rifle, they deserve to be beat, shot, and then beat again.

Thank you. Now I feel like I am getting some real advice.
And I may be new but I'm not a stupid guy. I know enough to not use jb weld on anything. But he said with a gun that has allot of recoil you don't what anything to move. And I said lock tight should work right and he said he used jb weld with good results.

Now thats just wrong.
But realy what is your budget for a scope? That might be helpful to make a more accurate recomendation. For totaly bottom dollar best bang for your buck I would recomend a used super sniper 10x , stay away from the 20x for me they are realy difficult to shoot , the 16x are not too bad. The 10x is the way to go though , also its not a bad "back up" scope if you up grade later on. TPS has my vote for the mounting systems if $ is a factor. Good luck , and get her shooting too it will make upgradeing much easier.

Get a 20moa rail. No benefit to geting a rail with 0 cant. You say it's a 500-600 rifle now, but that will change and when it does, why re-buy...

NF is a good scope that can be had affordable. Keep an eye on the for sale section.

In regards to the JB Weld...I ONLY use it on my sling swivel studs to keep them from backing out. I used Red Loc-Tite before, and it did'nt hold. On that new 5R of yours that HS stock has the studs only finger tight. (I currently own 3 different HS stocks, and all had finger tight studs.) That JB Weld is an ounce of prevention.

I cant account for the person that told you to use JB weld on your base! That said, I want to make sure that you understand that "I think" he was talking about bedding the base to the receiver using JB weld, not putting it on the screws!
This is actually a common practice. Attache the base to the receiver, mark its position, cut shallow dual X's in receiver ( staying with-in the marks) and also in the base. Skim coat the receiver with JB weld, attach base and torque it down. Remove excess material that seeps out...Done!
I am not doubting your intelligence, or saying you need to do this, just making sure you understand the process.

The guy at he local shop is correct JB weld is a very good idea. And it's not as permanent as you think and easily comes off. Call nightforce and ask them how they recommend bedding a scope base and see what they say.

I love when folks start bashing common practice that is widely used because it works, all because they are trying to impress people. Or maybe they are trying to get their post count up. Either way they look silly, and pretty much from there on will be regarded as such. This is a good case in point where one should use google before running off at the mouth and bashing a good method. It just reenforces the concept that a low post count means that one has no clue what the hell they are talking about when it comes to precision rigs.

OP: It's good that you ask, there are no dumb questions. The members here are quite knowledgeable and eager to provide good information. Just be careful of what you read and what to believe, even though they have such strong conviction in their stance.

This is a sport I am trying to take seriously. And I have to say after browsing around this site it is kind of intimidating asking a question on here. And I try to do my research before I ask but in this case there seams to be allot of mixed emotions. When I searched all I found was a gun that is for sale with the rail that has been jb welded on.

Let's get back to optics. What would you guys recommend for around $1000 scope and rings. I have been looking at the vallada or ?

I suggest you save a little more and get a used NXS. $1000 is kinda the "no mans land" of quality optics. I recently bought a used NXS with rings here for $1350...

Jason , dont ever not ask a question. I do agree there are some people on here that like to make others feel stupid , proably just to make themselves feel better , or they just have nothing intelligent to say.

But back to the scope thing. For your money you will be hard pressed to get anything better then TPS rings and bases (get the aluminum they are lighter and stronger than there steel). As far as optics , I would recomend going with a used scope. If you can find a Leupold , IOR , or even the 10x super sniper you will be happy. I would stay with the vxIII series of Leupold they will do any thing the mk4 will just less money. This is just my opnion but it will be good gear to keep you shooting for some time until you decide to upgrade.

For the best low dollar scope I recommend the Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x40 Mil-Dot ($150 - $180). I tried a Super Sniper 20X and was not impressed at all. I think it may just have been because it was a 20X. I’ve heard a lot of good results about the 10X Super Snipers. The other thing I’ve noticed is that both the Bushnell and Super Sniper hold their value well and can easily be sold when you’re ready to purchase a better scope. Heck, you may even make a little money if you sell it on ebay. The best advice I can offer is to checkout samplelist.com, they have some very good deals.

Great choice of rifle, I don’t think you will be disappointed. I love my 5R!

My $0.02...

I agree with all the suggestions on getting the SS 10x. I have used them on Barrett M99's and M82A1's, and they are both a quality scope and more than up to the task, and we have yet to break one so far. 10x is also a very versatile fixed magnification for the distances you're saying you will shoot. USMC snipers used it for decades with much success.

If you have a $1k budget, come in under it and put the rest of money into ammo. Nothing sucks worse than having a kick ass rifle you can't afford to shoot.

For a budget I would think of going with a 20 MOA base (EGW) is a lowered priced one that works fine for alot of people from what I've been told. A NXS is a great scope to have as far as I'm concerned. I have 5 of em and have them for a reason. Everyone is different but I like the 5.5x22 with the NP-R1 reticle. And MOA turrets as well of course. Trust me it is much better to go on and get something that you will like and can count on working. You can cheap out and buy a half ass scope and get by for a little while then maybe upgrade a little later regret it as well and then buy the one you really wanted all along ( like I did on my 1st LR project.) But in the end after all that has taken place you have just wasted the money you spent on the first and maybe second scopes you thought would work and still spent the money on the good glass you have to buy when it's all said and done. And on top of that, you could have allready mastered your good scope instead of changing scope models. You will learn that once you have the load you need for your rig, most all it is is knowing your contitions and mastering your scope. You need to know what to tell your scope to do and trust that it will do just that. Each and every time. Your rifle is supposed to do the same everytime and your scope is where all the changes will be made. So please trust that that is pretty much the most important thing you need in the long range world for good results. Everything is important but that is VERY important. Good luck to you sir. Keep the duct tape and JB weld off the rifles ( I was joking earlier, so please don't beat me, shoot me, and then beat me again) I hope everything works out for you and your wife understands that you need a good scope. Ok. So my wife jusT gave me the ok to get a scope.. I guess I have to keep her..
So now that I got an ok what should I get? IOR, NXS, loopy or ? I told her I would try to stay around $1600. So will that get me what I need in a GOOD hunting/target scope?
