Ok guys I am a newb here but have been lurking around here for some time now. Got some motivation to do a build with advice from all of you guys. Now I just need a little bit of advice on a stock I have everything else ready to rock. I did a quick search and could not find exactly what I was looking for but is there any rule of thumb so to speak on measuring lop or palm swell or cheek rise? The reason I am asking is because I have nowhere to actually see these stocks and feel them in person so it makes a tough decision. Any help would be great...

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

Welcome,
Are you looking for a stock or chassis?
Manners will send you a demo stock to try out the ergonomics.
Any others you'll have to find someone local to you who is willing to let you get your paws on it

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

heres what i do... being 6 foor 3 and 240+ lbs its hard to find anything that fits.... i stick to stuff thats very adjustable.... Bell and carlson a5..... mcmillan a5..... however the best i have come across is the tactical evolution from XLR......

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

Well I really don't have a preference I have really been looking into a mcrees chassis or manners or McMillan. This is a savage build so kinda limited on options also I am impatient like the most of us when we get a new toy so I don't really want to have to wait a year you know... Does manners charge for the demo stock and if so how much?

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

i believe you just have to pay for the shipping. they let you fondle it for a couple days. absolute top notch service from tom and company. I personally have a Cadex strike 33 chassis. its nice, but not worth the money. and have a H-S precision vertical adjustable sitting around. I'm not really a big fan of it.
Being a savage, I would recommend a manners, then the XLR or Mcrees

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

Adjustable is your friend, especially with comb height. Then just set up the comb height to give you the proper adjustment once you get the scope mounted. With the 40mm+ scopes being standard on our rifles, some kind of cheek riser is almost always necessary, and having it adjustable makes life that much easier. Otherwise you'll be playing with stock packs and such for your adjustment.

Palm swell is entirely objective. If you don't use a wrap-around grip, it's really not an issue. You really have to get behind the stock for that one.

The action you're using will determine what chassis you can use. Most chassis are fully adjustable, so they actually end up being a very easy route to go. A fully adjustable McMillan costs upwards of $900 without DBM (and I think they raised their prices this year).

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

Welcome, If you will tell a us little more we can help better. Your rifle what is it? what do you want to do with it? I have become a big fan of the McRees chassis cuz i like how easy they are to make them fit me. Slow at typing.

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

Well I have a savage short action, shilen 26in. Bull barrel chambered in 6.5 creedmoor, recoil lug and barrel nut from nss, vortex PST 6-24 with vortex precision matched rings medium I think, and weaver 20moa rail. I plan on using this rifle for up to 1000 yd targets, mabe the occasional pdog hunt

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

Yea I like the adjustability of the mcrees but I also like the look of the manners you know... The mcrees isn't really pretty to look at but hey they all look the same when your behind it looking through the scope right? Haha

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

Strike, I might try to call manners up on Monday and ask them about the demo that sounds awesome for a company to do that for a customer

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

Since you don't want to wait, Accuracy International just released their chassis for Savage actions. You might still be able to get one from Mile High.

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

Tom has an unbelievable following here and rightfully so. Just take a look at what stock you are interested in and let them know. The new T6 is getting rave review.
I think I'm going to order a TF2 for a 308 build that's at PCR. Best of luck

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

What got me hooked on the McRees is that i have several rifles and not enough money to stock each one, so with 2 bolts i can change from one to another. A lower and several uppers.

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

What about the butt hook for your non trigger hand anyone use this? Sounds usefull but I have never had one..pondering this as well

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

They have a place on there site that has in stock items, you might find something that will fit your needs. Not sure of the wait time but they might have that on there also. Best of luck with what ever you go after. If we can help in any way just post.

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

if you like a pistol grip or thumbhole stock get an AICS. you'll shell out a little bit more but you can usually find a good deal here on the hide and it'll already have the mag capability and will come with a mag. i started with an AICS and tried MANNERS and i prefer the AICS more and even upped it to an AX(that and i didnt have to bed the rifle which was a plus!). but in the end its user preference. goodluck!

Re: new here just wanted to say hey and a question

Well I ended up going with a mcrees chassis just for the adjustability and one of my buddies said if I didn't like it he would buy it from me so good chance to try it out I thought... Now I ordered it naked so what do you guys recommend as far as paint options? I want to have the barrel and action match so I will be doing the whole rifle. I am kinda a do-it-yourselfer so I would prefer to be able to paint it myself. Any suggestions?
