I am building a hunting/paper rig and was wondering about barrel length? The load I want to work up involves the new round hornaday is releasing next year. Till than I planned on shooting 208Amax's. The amax are 1.53 and the new match round is 1.55 and 225 grain. So my question is will a 26" tube get me to a 1000yards and beyond or do I need something around 30"? Some of the guys were saying they needed at least a 30". Me I wanted the shortest barrel I can get away with because I've always read shorter is stiffer thus more accurate. I was told the 1/10 twist would be fine. That is the last detail that is holding me back from ordering my blank from Rock creek. Thank you for your input!

If you are going for a hunting rig, I would go for a 26" finished length. You will easily be able to get to 1K with that. Longer will give you more speed. I opted for 29" in my target rig and 26" in my lighter weight hunting rig.

1 in 10 twist should be fine. I have spoken with Sierra about this and they say that the 240 gr bullet may require the 1 in 9, but at lower weights, 1 in 10 will get it done. Call Hornady and see what they recommend or ask Rock Creek.

If your gonna go custom go for 29-30". You can get there just fine with a 26" but longer is better in this situation unless your worried about weight. The extra velocity will far out weigh any benefits you will get from a shorter barrel in this case.

For a hunting rifle you're going to find that shorter barrel to be easier to handle. For a pure target rifle I see little reason to chop down perfectly good tubing.

That being said, you can make those bullets run past 1000yd with absolutely no issue with a 22" barrel. The 26" will work just fine I'm sure.
