I just came back from warming up my tractor for some mail box harvesting. About a foot of fresh snow, "0" degrees and 15 MPH Wind.

Got me thinking of Stalingrad or the Winter War.

There are lots of Mosins and Mauser's out there, I'm thinking on putting on a match with conditions like today, where as all you get is an As Issued Mosin or Mauser, ammo, and what ever cloths you can wear. No mats, just you and your rifle, firing from 100 to 300 yards. Of course no snow plows prior to the match.

Wonder how many takers I'd get?

Re: New ideal for a tactical match

I would say none.

But for a MOA of center mass IDPA steel target it would be fun.

For the match director and staff

You would be surprised. ASC had a winter match with like conditions and people showed. Not me though as I have some common sense

Kraig, I think your idea is a great one. These guys are just sissies with AI's and Hensoldts. lol
Really though, I don't know about 0 degrees F.

Maybe 30-40??

Maybe vintage guns. That's cool as hell.

I'd have to agree. To heck with Stalingrad.

Re: New ideal for a tactical match

Mate, you should come over to our range and shoot one of our military comps, the range is high up on the moors and its nearly always blowing a gale and freezing cold even in the middle of summer. Shooting this time of year can only be called character building...

Awwwww come on Rob it wasn't THAT bad. Heck the sun was up by 0800 and it made it all the way up to 23*F that day (course it started at 0500 in a blizzard

). Besides Brock was cooking dead cow again

On another note I MIGHT be inclined to drag a Mosin out in the snow but someone else can bring their Mauser. Wasn't there a little winter deal for the Allies as well somewhere in the Arden Forest?

Maybe you could include M1's, 03's and Carbines too. Just call it the "WWII winter revival".

Cheers,

Doc

Says the guy from deep down south LOL Try living up here and shooting in that shit all winter and having to get back in the car every 10 rounds to feel your fingers again. Not fun. When I go to a match and spend close to $1000 for the weekend of shooting I want it warmer and sunnier with less snow then I have to work with for almost 4 months out of the year. You guys have fun though.

Common Guys, MAN UP. I was a company commander of Eskimo NG Company Headquartered in Shishmarif AK (NW of Nome). We did most of our training, including weapons training in the winter. Not that bad of a deal (unless you want to recover your brass. That gets difficult at times.

Re: New ideal for a tactical match

Rob, we have to get back in the car every 10 rounds too when OCW load testing during parts of the year.......I put the butt of the rifle in the back seat and the muzzle in the A/C vent to obviously blow air down the hot-ass barrel because it sure as hell was NOT going to cool outdoors under the uninsulated metal roof over the firing line....so fn hot the test would've taken two days instead of one, as it were!

I do see. In Bryan Litz's book is a photo of a test where there's nothing but snow all over. One look and my only thought was "...shit on that. That test can wait!"

(Does the exclamation mark go before or after the quotation mark?)

p.s. I'm also one of the sissies with (used to have) the AI.

Re: New ideal for a tactical match

Add Springfield M1903 to the mix.
I actually really like that idea. Sounds like a lot of fun. It would be good to do in a mock village or around an abandoned farm where you could have firing points from a hay loft or the attic of an old farm house, or from under an old chicken coop? Just thinkin..
