Anyone shooting this new offering from Lapua? Does the palma brass have same measurements as regular 308 win brass with only difference the small primer used and what would be the advantages with the palma brass verses the regular 308 win brass.

Re: New Lapua 308 palma brass.

The advantage using a small primer pocket verses a large pocket is to get a light ignition causing a more consistent burn and lowering the extreme spread. Years ago, RWS lg primers were the best primers for that application, but good luck trying to get your hands on them. And if you do, it'll cost you. Switching to a small primer in a 308 pretty much solve that problem.

Re: New Lapua 308 palma brass.

The reports from the Palma shooters who tested the brass indicated better velocity consistency - lower ES/SD. Also the small primer pockets give stronger case bases which handle the high pressure Palma loads better - less case expansion = more reloads before the primer pockets get too big.

Re: New Lapua 308 palma brass.

I guess the new brass will be expensive, I understand the case was developed for palma shooters using 155g bullets but wonder how well the small primer will work with compressed or high volume powder loads with 185g+ weight bullets, Not sure if the small primer will complete full powder burn of say a Load consisiting of 49g n550 which i use with the lapau 185g molly scenar, I sure hope they offer a 243 win case version soon, Would be great using the high bc 105-115g bullets.

Re: New Lapua 308 palma brass.

Remington URBR brass is my only choice for the 308/7.62 NATO family of cartridges.
I use the URBR brass to form 22-250,243,260,7mm-08,308 & 358 brass.

URBR small primer pocket brass weighs 155gr.
.0105" neck wall
.080" flash hole
30-35 reloads aren't uncommon with URBR brass.
ES/SD print outs through the Oehler are amazing!!!

Remington manufactured their URBR brass 20yrs ago to form 22BR/6mmBR/7mmBR 1.520" length cases.

4500pcs of virgin URBR brass on hand allows me to sleep easy!!!!

I'll test some Lapua in a couple gas guns.

Re: New Lapua 308 palma brass.

4,500 pieces! I think I would still prefer that to Lapua because of the thin case walls, although I bet the Lapua will be a lot more uniform... and less expensive. I saw some UBR for sale a while ago for $1 a case. Ouch!

Re: New Lapua 308 palma brass.

Im defenitely interested to see how this all plays out and what kind of results handloaders can expect. The concept sounds like a great solution and makes since when discussed with burn ratios and ES/SD measurements. Im not goin to be the guiney pig though.

Re: New Lapua 308 palma brass.

Same here, any updates? Anyone actually compare loads side by side? I keep reading, from some very respectable sources, that there is no noticeable advantage. Or if there is an advantage, it is very small and likely not worth the trouble and expense. BUT! every detractor seems to be talking about ES, SD and group sizes only. What about the claim of higher pressures possible with small primer pocket and a bushed firing pin setup? I cannot seem to find anyone who says they have tested for higher pressures. Anyone?

P.S. - with regards to long range shooting and pushing the pressure limits, is there an issue with consistently igniting a full powder column with SR primers?

Re: New Lapua 308 palma brass.

Interested to know if anybody can report their results with this small primer brass for a 308 Win? Especially since its the only Lapua brass anybody has in stock right now...

Re: New Lapua 308 palma brass.

The info in the German Salazar link above says it all. If it's all you can find they will work, but IMO it's more of a headache than it's worth because most 308 dies use a decap pin that is larger than the flash hole in these cases.

Also small rifle primers seem to be harder to find right now. I've never had any trouble with ignition, but then again I've only used the Rem 7-1/2 primers in them (very hot).

Thanks, it's just crazy out there right now...I'll wait on the Federal 210 Match Large primers to come back in stock.
