I’m new to the forum and looking for advice. I’m a lifelong hunter and familiar to hunting rifles. I’ve recently determined to learn to shoot distance. I have no desire yet to shoot competition but I do intend to learn to dope and put first shots on target and various ranges and windages. That said my hunting rifle of choice is a 300wm in a Ruger m77 LH with a Zeiss 3x9. From a bench it shoots rounds touching or close at 100yds with factory Hornady 165g ammo. I bought a new Bergara 300wm. I’m about to break in the barrel and will start to investigate which optic and bipod to add. Again the goal is to 1. learn to shoot MOA first round on target. 2. Eventually work up to 1000yd shot. Please advise an optic and bipod. Any other advice is appreciated.

I like Harris bipods b/c they don’t pan and they don’t break easily.

Vortex optics, especially for hunting, because of their warranty. The LRH is a good optic and will work to carry and get you to 1k. The razor hd gen II would work great if you are going to be on the bench 95% of the time. For 1k you don’t need magnification more than 10x, but it’s nice to have. It just matters how much you want to spend and how much you care about weight.

I would also plan on getting a solid rangefinder if you don’t already have one. I‘ve been disappointed by two rangefinders, the most recent the Kilo 2000, when trying to range within 1k. I can tell you from experience the Terrapin X works, but I would imagine the Leupold 2800 would work just as well and it’s half the price and half the size.
