New LR shooter

Re: New LR shooter

GREAT THREAD!

As another noob in the hunt for knowledge I've got to love when someone is on the same road as I and asks the same question I've got before I can. I'm looking at the 700 AAc myself, just for the 1:10 twist, cannot get a "can" in my state.

Just a request, don't ask for PM's with the info, I could use it too!!!

After weeks of research and many online reviews, I'm going to go with the SS 10X42. <span style="color: #CC0000">I know it's not the greatest</span>, but neither is my shooting ability. I normaly shoot Bullseye so this should help my scores there too.</div></div>
Not the best, but fantastic none the less! I seriously can't say enough good things about this scope as I'm sure anyone can tell

They make a 16x and a 20x also but they are fixed power. I am wanting to go with a variable power for hunting purposes so either hawke or bushnell will be getting my money due to the lack of a variable power swfa ss scope that gets more than 3-9x magnification </div></div>
Look into Vortex before making a definitive decision.

Re: New LR shooter

Has anyone compared the SS 3-9x42 to the 10x42? I am starting to think the variable might be a better choice. While our range goes to 500 yards, it pretty much closes down the rest of the range when it's in use. Most of my shooting will probably be 100 to 200 yards. I wish I could swing both, but I could never sneak that much out of the checking account

Re: New LR shooter

Nice going Tac, one thing at a time. I was all set on a .308 and now I am starting to backtrack a little. I might go with a .223. See if this makes sense. The longest I can shoot at my range is 500 yards, but that puts the damper on everyone else. I can shoot 200 all day long and everyone is happy. So, most of my shooting will be at 200 yards. Thanks to the great info on this site, it looks like the .223 will reach out 500 yards with a little work on the right load. Mind you, this rifle will be a papper punch only, no hunting. So I can more then live with 500 yards. I also have two boys ages 13 and 14 that I want to shoot with. The .223 would have much less recoil then the .308. And lastly, since I will be reloading and I already have a nice RRA AR in .223, there would be one less caliber I have to worry about. What do you all think? Geez, if I could just hit the lottery this would be so much easier.

Re: New LR shooter

you and me both on the lottery... Sounds like you've got it right. A .223 would be much less expensive to shoot and I have seen a friend of mine put some descent groups on paper with a precision AR at 500 yards so I know that it can be done. I also know that an AR will kill hogs as well so even if you wanted to do some hunting, a .223 wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Re: New LR shooter

O.K. guys count me in. I just ordered a SPS tactical in .223. SWFA has my 10 x 42 SS on the way with the rings and base. Hopefully I'll be sending bullets down range in a week or so. Thanks to all the great info on this site, I know I have the base for a great stick.

Re: New LR shooter

Tac,
Where did you find the aac? I had one all lined up and someone got to it before me. Cash in hand and missed it be 2 hrs. I've got every dealer in an hr of mee looking for one now with no luck. Finally made up my mind and now I cant find one !!!

Also is that an xd in the pic?
got the xdm 45 myself, great gun.

Re: New LR shooter

sorry it's took me a bit to reply... @slayer2c, I didn't end up getting the aac model because like yourself, I couldn't find one anywhere. For now I'm just going to run it without a brake and see how I like it. Yes it's an xd.40 tactical (5") and I love it but I may be selling it to get a .357 or .44mag. I'm taking a pretty lengthy road trip this summer to northern cali and across the northern part of the country to the glacier national park and need something that would be effective against bears just in case. Wish I could afford to keep it and still get a hand cannon but finances are dictating otherwise...

Nice! I'm still trying to get some funds together for the optics. I broke a finger last week and that has unfortunately set me back a bit in the toy money department... Such is life I suppose.

Re: New LR shooter

Sorry to hear about the finger Tac. I hope it wasn't your trigger finger. I was on vacation last week so I finally got to play with the new toy. I love the scope and rifle, but I hate the stock. I see why everyone does the upgrade. I added a double layer of mouse pad and some duct tape which helped a lot with sight picture. My biggest problem is with the grip. I just can't seem to get my hand in a comfortable position and still have a good trigger pull. At least this stock let's me know what I don't want.

Re: New LR shooter

Tac,
Are you still around or did you start on that road trip? You will love Glacier Park. I was born and raised just south of there. A little town called Columbis Falls.
