Took the rifle out to the range today.... fought some scope problems, butthe rifle is still shooting pretty good.

remington LTR with mark 4 4.5-14. rings are different now, I swapped them out this morning for seekins, it's on an IOR 20 MOA base.

If I could get rid of the single flyers out of these 5 shot groups, I'd be thrilled. I think I may be getting in a hurry, and shooting the groups too quick... only 45-60 seconds between shots. These were the only groups I shot at 100 yards. everything else was at 200 and 300. those targets are not available for public appearence. shooting factory 168 grain Amax TAP loads right now... stocking up on brass.

only 45-60 seconds between shots, thats an eternity to me. But the groups look good, they will come down in size when you get settled in behind the rifle. My two pieces of advice, sign up for the online training and load your own boolits and fine tune your load to your rifle and the groups will tighten up a bit

Re: New Rifle range report

Lookin good! Is the rifle bedded in the stock? If you want to really start exploring percision rifle shooting you should get a cheap reloading start up kit. It will make a huge difference and save money. Don't be intimidated, it's very simple. Just buy a Sierra or hornady loading manual when you get a chance and read the hell out of it.

I like the glass, what kind of reticle is that?

Re: New Rifle range report

I reloaded 15 years ago, and just stopped doing it. I plan on getting started again. I thought I could shoot 200-300 rounds of factory, to give me a good supply of brass (shot in my rifle) to start off with.

as far as the rifle, I haven't done anything to it.. I did adjust the trigger, now it breaks about 3 lbs. I'll probably use this for hunting occasionally too, so I don't want a ultra light trigger on it. most of the roups I shot at 200-300 tended to have more of a horizontal spacing, and the vertical was good. So maybe bedding will be my first project

the reticle is the tacticle milling reticle. it has 1/2 mil hash marks at the normal interval, with 1/5 mil hash marks in between.

The scope is a bastard to get the parallax set shooting at 100 yards though. it wasn't as bad at 200-300, but it still doesn't seem right...

Re: New Rifle range report

I throw fliers when I pull my cheek weld. I get horz groups which can be taken as fliers when I roll my finger on the trigger shoe.

I believe I do my best at 5 or so seconds between shots. The longer I take, the more heartbeat I must over come and I think about fundamentals being perfect and then get them all out of whack.

Nice stick! Nice shootin' too.

Re: New Rifle range report

NIce shooting. Those 168 AMAX TAP are just awesome aren't they? Hornady brass are over all quite good. If you are going to reload, I would suggest keeping all the brass the same.

THat's the plan. I tried a few other factory loads, mainly trying to find a hunting bullet that would shoot as well as the Amax, but I have yet ot find it... federal premium 165 grain game king = crap, winchester 168 grain silver tip = 1.25 MOA... so we'll have to see.

as far as the brass issue, I have been shooting two different types of TAP ammo, one is in brass casing, and the other is in nickel plated casing.... would this make a difference for reloading? Right now, out of the box they shoot very similar, so I'm thinkking there should be no dramatic differences?

Re: New Rifle range report

I did the same thing this weekend. New (to me) 700 LTR that I picked up last week for for $600 with a Badger rail on it. Took it to the range this weekend, slapped an SN-3 on it, and shot a few 155 Scenar loads through it at 100. The low right shot was the clean barrel/fouler.

I had some left over home-grown match rounds from the F-class shoot this weekend that it liked better. 175smk's at 2.800oal with 44.2gr. of RE-15.

I thought it was funny to show up at the range, use targets that were left out there, shoot +-25 shots, and leave happy. This is going to make a hell of a hunting gun!

Re: New Rifle range report

A couple things that I always look at is the bedding and the crown. Good contact in the stock and a clean sharp crown usually make a noticable diference. Exspecially on a straight factory gun. I've cut some factory crowns off that look like they were cut with a deburring tool used for inside deburring the case mouth of brass : )
