After a long battle my old Garand barrel is about as bad as they get. It literally looks like a gravel road. I haven't givin it much thought as its mostly a fun gun to shoot. Anyway lookin around it appears I can have a new tube twisted on using a criterion barrel in the $300 range. Or it appears I can buy the tools and get an old milspec barrel and do it myself for around the same or slightly more.

I would like to get more into the distance with the old irons and this looks like a good start. Any thoughts on reworking an old warhorse? I figure with new barrel, NM sights, and new wood stock should be able to hit the $600 range which puts me in the $900 total invested in it. Thought about a new Bolt with the barrel which brings it up a tad bit more.

I know there are other forums for this type of thing but I figured there were more than a few peeps here running old irons for fun.

The other option is wallhanger this one and go tot he CMP and get a field grade for a bit less.

I got a used but very good 1951 barrel from Tim Shufflin at Shufflin's Parkerizing, he installed it and did a few other thing to the old girl, very happy with his work and price, pretty sure he has a web site. He's in Michigan, about 50 miles from me so it was nice to just drop it off and pick it up but you can ship to him too.
