Hello, everyone. I've been consulting the forums here for some time, reading user reviews on rifles and optics, and I wanted to check in and say hello.

I purchased my RRA LAR-8 Varmint A4, with the 20" stainless bull barrel around three months ago, and I finally got around to throwing a scope on it and taking it to the range this morning.

The Rock River shot exceptionally well, with only a few fliers, which I attribute more to myself than the firearm.

Best group was 3 shots (would have fired more, but spent most of the box sighting-in) measuring .675 center to center. Two of the three shots are touching, and the two shots fired into the target's "main" bull were also touching. I am convinced that if I were to do my part, that this rifle would send rounds through the same hole all day long.

Rounds were out of the box Federal Premium Gold Medal 168gr Sierra Match Kings.

I tested the rifle with a cheap 3-9x40 Swift, removed from my A-bolt and tossed in the closet when it fogged up on a rainy day. I have a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 SFP on the way, and will post an update when I've tested with it.

Overall, I'm VERY happy with how this gun shot today, and I can't wait to see how it shoots with a better scope and a broken-in shooter.

Re: New Member, First Time Out, RRA LAR-8 Varmint

It is obvious that I am a fan of the Rock River as well. I shoot it in competitions from time to time and have been very pleased with it. 1/2 Moa groups are attainable with handloads. I have the 26" with a NF 5.5x22 nxs. Mine really likes nosler 168's and I have taken it out to 1000 on multiple occasions. My gun is real picky with the FAL mags, but if you buy a few RR polymer mags you will be good to go. Also be careful with that superlight 2 stage conpetition trigger in it. If your trigger squeeze becomes too soft, it will double like an m60! Obviously not the gun's fault, it is more like a bump fire. The heavier recoil just makes it a little more likely than in .223/5.56. Enjoy your new rifle, I know that I am. Good shooting by the way.

Thanks for the input. I'll probably end up working out a hand load for the rifle eventually, but it seems to like the federals just fine, so I'll probably be shooting those for the time being. Need to find a good deer round, as well. (You know.. For when I'm sitting in the back of the parked truck with 12 pounds worth of barrel, waiting for them to come to me. lol)

Didn't have any bump fires today, but that may be because I'm pretty good about getting up on the gun. Used to shooting my father's .280, or my .30_06, both of which deliver a fair wallop to my shoulder. All that weight made the LAR-8 a joy to shoot in comparison.
