Hey guys been lurkin around here for several years and thought it was time to join up on this build. Im no pro at this, just a country boy that wants to expand his knowledge AND shooting distance. I got a couple questions so far and want to clear them up before proceeding on. Pretty much set on a Remington .308 but not sure on all the models. From what I have read they are all the same barreled action until you get to 5R Mil-spec. I dont think I need to go as far as the 5R at this point in my life. I plan to re-stock this gun with a Manners or maybe AICS so would yall agree that I should just get the SPS Varmint for a base?

As for glass Im needing to fall in around $1K. Looked at the Vortex Viper PST line, looks really nice! Might be able to splurge for the SWFA SS. Still learing about FFP and SFP to help me make my decision.

Again thanks for all the valuable info on here!

Re: New Member, New Rifle Questions??

Sounds like you are on the right track. This was the route i was going but i'm a lefty and couldn't find a rem 700 to start with so went a custom route. The rem 700 varmint would be an excellent place to start and good glass and a new stock/chassis would be what you want done quickly.

The manners stock with the mini-chassis ( http://mannersstocks.com/mcs-dbm-mini-chassis/ )is a great option to get the comfort of a fiberglass stock and the mount and go benefits of a chassis system, also an ACIS or mcree chassis amoung others sound like good options also but i have no experience with those.

You can't go wrong with the Vortex PST line or the SWFA SS 5-20 they are both great scopes but i would definitely go FFP. The ranging benefit is nice but the main thing is the ability to hold for wind or over/under for distance at any magnification.

Add to that a good base and rings (seekins is my top choice) and you will have a sweet rig to get you going.

Re: New Member, New Rifle Questions??

Thanks! I just wanted to confirm that I didnt need to go with the PSS or 700P whatever its labeled as now being is how I plan to re-stock it anyway. Im still learning about all this MOA stuff and would like to find a local class to help me with it. Been doing some reading on here to help me understand it abit but Im a hands on type of guy.

Re: New Member, New Rifle Questions??

Sign up for the online training here on the hide, great info for someone starting out.

700P and the 700SPS-V are identical save a different finish on the 700P (parkerized on P instead of matte blue on the SPS) and it has an HS stock. The manners or a chassis would be an upgrade/better option so no use paying for something you will take off.

FFP is the choice weather going MOA or mils, whichever you go with make sure the reticle matches the turrets (either MOA/MOA or mils/mils). More people seem to be using mils in the tactical shooting realm so using that may help in comparing notes with others.

Re: New Member, New Rifle Questions??

I started with a remington 700 Varmint SPS a year and a half ago. Bought it for $450, best money I ever spent.

Fantastic starting platform...don't listen to the 6/6.5 guys until you're ready for matches.

Shoot it tons. Learn lots. Then re-evaluate.
